10 Trends We're Saying Goodbye to This Fall and What We're Opting for Instead

10 Trends We're Saying Goodbye to This Fall and What We're Opting for Instead

Autumn is that special time of year that every fashion enthusiast eagerly anticipates. Consider New York Fashion Week as the fashion world’s equivalent of New Year's Eve—it marks an exhilarating start to the next phase of fashion. For editors who spend much of their time contemplating which trends to embrace in the upcoming year, this is the ideal opportunity for a quick closet refresh, bidding farewell to the old and welcoming the new. Now that August is well underway, the editors at Who What Wear are already immersed in fall vibes, despite the sweltering heat. We are reviewing runway showcases and meeting with designers, all in pursuit of the trends we should be aware of right now. I couldn’t think of a better time to ask my colleagues which fall trends from last year they anticipate won’t continue into the next season, and they had plenty to share. Every time I log into social media, I’m bombarded with an array of fall trends, and I’m eager to discover which will emerge first. In the meantime, here are the insightful predictions from my coworkers. Below, see which fall trends the editors are excited to keep and which ones they are not looking forward to.

      Pausing: Floor-Length Skirts

      Loving: Lace and Sequined Skirts

"I truly believe bohemian styles are going to make a significant comeback this fall thanks to Chemena Kamali at Chloé, and I anticipate a major revival of skirts that are so long they reach the floor. Although I consider myself a fan of skirts, I’m not entirely fond of how floor-length skirts look on me due to my long torso. Instead, I plan to embrace the boho aesthetic this fall with lace and sequined skirts and occasionally layering shorter skirts on top. This approach still very much channels the 'flower child' vibe with its bold textures and dimensions but in a way that feels more personal to me."

      Pausing: Pointed-Toe Shoes

      Loving: Square-Toe Shoes

"I regret to say it, but I’m skipping pointed-toe shoes this fall. I own so many pairs—from flats to heels to boots—but square-toe shoes are dominating my fall inspiration board. They offer the same sleekness as pointed-toe shoes while adding an eclectic flair to any outfit."

      Pausing: Small Hoops

      Loving: Statement Earrings

"There’s always a place for diamond huggies and small gold hoops, but this fall, I’m all about embracing the statement-earring trend. During the presentation of fall/winter 2025 collections in February, we spotted this chunky accessory at brands like Saint Laurent, Alaïa, Miu Miu, and Givenchy—all showcasing designs from large vintage-inspired gold studs to mixed-metal floral earrings. The wide variety in styles means I can't go wrong when shopping for a pair and choosing what to wear."

      Mejuri

      Organic Dôme Mixed Pebble Earrings

      Pausing: Riding Boots

      Loving: Sexy Stiletto Boots

"Trust me, I've tried, but I just can’t incorporate riding boots into my fall shoe lineup. I’m someone who needs at least a little heel to feel that an outfit is complete, and the ultra-flat sole of this boot trend doesn’t work for me. I’ve owned many pairs that always end up collecting dust in my closet. I'm not sure I'd call it a trend, but I adore sexy stiletto boots—knee-high, naturally—with a snug fit. They look fabulous with skirts and dresses and can easily be worn under jeans and trousers without adding bulk."

      Saint Laurent

      Francoise Boots

      MANOLO BLAHNIK

      Pamfilo 90 Stretch-Suede Knee Boots

      Pausing: Sweater Vests

      Loving: Polo-Neck Cardigans

"While I'm not disregarding the preppy style, it’s become apparent that sweater vests—especially when teamed with pleated skirts—aren’t for me. A trend in a similar direction that I’m likely to order before fall is polo-neck cardigans. Pro tip: Leave a couple of buttons at the top and bottom undone for a more rebellious preppy vibe."

      Bandy Button Front Sweater

      Collared Button-Up Sweater

      Pausing: Knit Dresses

      Loving: Lace-Trim Slip Dresses

"Although knit dresses used to be a staple in my fall wardrobe, I’ve been reaching for them less each year. Now, as I look to fall, I've completely lost my desire to wear them. Instead, I’m focusing on lace-trim slip dresses, which not only
