If You’re Going to a Black-Tie Wedding This Year, Here Are the Top Dresses to Consider Wearing

We often discuss wedding season, but from my perspective, it lasts all year long, from January to December. If you've attended numerous weddings this year, like I have, and still have more on your agenda, you've likely become adept at planning your outfits ahead of time. Selecting an outfit as a wedding guest can be challenging, especially when trying to interpret the dress code. While some rules are obvious (like avoiding any shade of white), others can be more subtle and hard to navigate. Although I haven't experienced a black-tie wedding myself, a friend recently attended one, prompting me to consider what a black-tie dress code entails and how to properly dress as a guest at such an event. After extensive research and consulting with experts, here’s a comprehensive guide on dressing appropriately for a black-tie wedding as a guest.

What Does the Black-Tie Dress Code Entail?

Black tie represents the most formal of dress codes, emphasizing an opulent approach to attire. Here, elegance and sophistication are paramount, and the details significantly impact the overall look. This is one occasion where you can't be overdressed, but being underdressed is definitely a possibility. Stylist Laura Weatherburn notes, “This is the kind of wedding for which you should go all out. Opt for clean lines, floor-length garments, and sleek, form-fitting styles. Think: showstopper.” In essence, a black-tie dress code applies to formal gatherings. The term "black tie" originally describes a man's required attire of a dinner jacket and black tie, leaving the interpretation of women's attire more open. Generally, floor-length hemlines are preferred—think evening gowns and formal cocktail dresses, with men dressed in tuxedos. Guests are expected to dress to the nines since this is the second most formal dress code after white tie. However, it does not limit women to wearing black; personal shopper Sofie Tyers suggests “any muted color is acceptable, avoiding patterns. A strapless floor-length gown in pale yellow would offer a modern take while maintaining the elegance expected for black-tie events.” Given the formality of the dress code, attention to detail is crucial. The right accessories can elevate your outfit—remember the principle of “more is more.” Incorporate crystals, pearls, and anything bold to amplify that showstopper aesthetic. Weatherburn recommends “elevating the glamour with an abundance of crystal accessories, including bags and shoes. I often draw inspiration from Alessandra Rich for stunning, jewel-worthy pieces.”

Shopping for a black-tie wedding can be daunting, so approaching it with an open mind is wise. Avoid fixating on a particular color or brand, as it could lead to disappointment if you don't find something that meets the dress code. When deciding where to shop, it can feel overwhelming, so Weatherburn suggests “considering Solace, Reformation, Victoria Beckham, and Self Portrait for beautiful options this season that also transition well between seasons. ASOS is another excellent choice for occasion wear and is budget-friendly.”

      What Should I Avoid?

Since this is a formal event, the dress code is strict, and out of respect for the bride and groom, it should be followed without personal interpretation or modern twists. Weatherburn advises against “anything floaty or sheer, cut-out styles, or short, revealing outfits.” Similarly, beachy, bohemian fashions or casual wedding attire are inappropriate, which excludes mini dresses from the options.

With all this in mind, I've compiled a list of suitable black-tie wedding guest dresses across various budgets to help you comply with the dress code.
