The Loves of My Life: Frida Giannini
The most impactful interviews often delve into personal territory. In "Loves of My Life," we uncover the individuals behind their artistry, exploring the essential questions we’re eager to ask—favorite restaurants, date-night locations, cherished pieces of jewelry, and the contents of their handbags. Essentially, these reveal their true loves.
Frida Giannini is a globally renowned Italian designer, celebrated for her decade-long role as Creative Director at Gucci from 2005 to 2015. Giannini began her career at Fendi in 1997, quickly advancing before she joined Gucci in 2002. She is admired for her significant contributions to fashion and her dedication to craftsmanship, heritage, and cultural conservation. She has collaborated with organizations like UNICEF, LACMA, and the Martin Scorsese Foundation, promoting global education, film restoration, and the arts. In 2013, she co-founded Chime for Change with Beyoncé and Salma Hayek. Her recent endeavors encompass fashion, interior design, and publishing, continuing to showcase her devotion to timeless luxury and creative innovation. She is set to release a capsule collection with the esteemed London department store, Liberty, in celebration of its 150th anniversary. Named HYPERNOVA 150, Frida's collection pays tribute to contrasts—combining elegance with edge, heritage with rebellion, and British tradition with contemporary glamour.
Can you discuss your experience collaborating with the Liberty design team and what inspired this collection?
I felt greatly honored to be part of this project, especially since few companies reach a 150-year mark. Liberty is a significant symbol of British culture in London. I knew much about Liberty; during my time in London, it was always a place I visited. I researched reference materials and the history of artists who collaborated with Liberty, as well as the surrounding art and crafts. I perceive a constant juxtaposition in London and British culture between tradition, like the royal family, and a punkish attitude, which makes it one of the most vibrant places I’ve ever lived. Having spent a couple of years in London, I am deeply connected to its spirit, and I cherish its energy. I really enjoy Hampstead Heath and Whitechapel. A unique place for me is Leighton House, which dates back to the Victorian era. It's a museum featuring original Victorian furniture—once, a photographer took me there, and it was truly stunning.
If you had 72 hours in London, what is your favorite hotel and why?
I’m a strong supporter of Claridge's—I always choose to stay there. They’ve known me for many years and are aware of my preferred room. Their tea room, where breakfast is served, has a delightful atmosphere and beautiful interiors.
When you visit London, what do you enjoy buying or indulging in?
Whenever I have time to shop, I always find something intriguing to take home, often a trunk. I have a passion for stationery, enjoy purchasing vinyl records around Carnaby Street, and love exploring the area between King's Road and Chelsea, filled with both well-known and niche labels, which I’m always excited to discover.
What are your essential items in your handbag?
The first item I place in my bag is headphones, as I listen to a lot of music. I even use music to fall asleep—it acts as my sleeping aid! Naturally, I also carry earplugs, a book, and a lovely candle. The first purchase I make at the airport or upon arriving in London is a good candle.
Who is your favorite musical artist ever?
Without a doubt, it’s Bowie, because I believe he was groundbreaking in so many aspects. He revolutionized performance, pioneered electronic music, defined his own unique style, collaborated innovatively with fashion designer Kansai Yamamoto, and was a trailblazer in makeup and androgyny.
What are some of your all-time favorite films?
I love "Blow Up" (1966), "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994), "Bram Stoker's Dracula" (1992), "Black Swan" (2010), and "American Gigolo" (1980), the last of which is a tribute to Mr. Giorgio Armani, who was a dear friend of mine.
What fragrance do you love?
BDK Parfums Rouge Smoking Extrait.
Are you a collector of anything specific?
I collect photographs by Richard Avedon, vintage furniture from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, and anything related to David Bowie, including photos, vinyl records, original covers, and books.
Could you share a piece of advice from someone you cherish that has stayed with you?
I believe the best advice I received—and that I often share during times of struggle (as everyone faces challenges sooner or later)—is to look ahead and keep moving forward. Stand tall and gather your energy, recognize the breadth of life, and focus on the future
