Gen Z Says is a bimonthly column that explores the latest trends in fashion and beauty as seen through the eyes of Who What Wear's Gen Z editors. You can look forward to insights on emerging tastemakers, designers, and shopping and style choices directly from the trendsetting generation. Coffee culture is regarded as an art form by some, not as significant by others, but for many, it serves as a daily ritual. It may start with choosing a mug, moving to fill a coffee pot or using a semi-automatic steamer, and then frothing milk or adding syrups and spices. That small to-go cup nestled in a gloved hand, once found waiting for you at a coffee shop counter, symbolizes a shared experience that, while not universally engaged in, carries a shared understanding of its meaning.
I grew up on the outskirts of Seattle, Washington, where stepping into a coffee house with oversized leather sofas, a couple of fireplaces, and soft jazz or grunge music playing in the background provided a respite from the dampness of a Pacific Northwest autumn. I could pull out a book, bring my own mug for a fresh cup, and lose myself in the warmth of it all. Although I missed experiencing the enchanting vibe of the Global Village Coffeehouse that characterized the '90s, I enjoy scrolling through nostalgic Pinterest, TikTok, and Instagram posts that capture its moody lighting, whimsical decor, and hand-drawn illustrations.
While grabbing coffee with a friend is often a social event, it’s fair to say many coffee drinkers indulge with the intent of getting a boost of energy. Plus, the aroma is simply delightful. Beyond that, coffee holds various benefits in beauty. Used as a scrub, it gently exfoliates the skin for a bright and smooth effect. In haircare, it’s recognized for promoting hair growth and enhancing scalp health. Similarly, the scent of coffee in perfumes or home fragrances can enhance alertness, elevate mood, and improve performance throughout the day. Below, I share my favorite coffee-inspired beauty products that offer a caffeinated boost.
Fragrances:
**d'Annam**
Vietnamese Coffee Eau de Parfum
Scent Type: Aromatic spices
Notes: Roasted coffee, condensed milk, dark chocolate, tonka bean, amber
This perfume is inspired by Vietnamese iced coffee, renowned for its blend of dark roasted robusta beans—with a rich, caramel-chocolate flavor and a bitter finish—combined with creamy condensed milk and ice. The D'Annam fragrance captures the essence of this drink with intense roasted coffee, complemented by notes of condensed milk and dark chocolate, supported by smooth amber and warm tonka bean. When I can't pause my writing sessions, this scent brings me all the comfort of a coffee break without losing time.
**Maison Margiela**
Replica Coffee Break Eau de Toilette
Scent Type: Gourmand fougere
Notes: Coffee accord, red apple accord, lemon essence, lavender essence, spearmint essence, orange flower absolute, milk mousse accord, sandalwood essence, cedarwood essence
I remember spending rainy afternoons in Seattle coffee shops, colorful mug in hand and notebooks filled with my thoughts. A spray of this Maison Margiela fragrance evokes those memories. It opens with a coffee accord that is both gourmand and slightly woody. Next, herbal and floral notes of lavender and spearmint come forward. The scent closes with creamy, gourmand hints from a milk mousse accord perched on a cozy, woodsy base. This will mark my fourth consecutive year including it in my fall fragrance rotation.
**D.S. & Durga**
Brown Flowers Eau de Parfum
Scent Type: Floral musk
Notes: Acabia, dried cedrat, Queen Anne's lace, brown orchid, coffee flower, sambac flower, aged musk, roots, coffee
If you know me, you’re aware I have a penchant for niche fragrances with a vintage feel. I fell in love with this D.S. & Durga eau de parfum in early 2025 for its resemblance to both aged lipstick (one of my favorite scents as a vintage collector) and the gently scented dried flowers I love displaying throughout my home. The perfume opens with acabia and dried cedrat, followed by a rich blend of brown orchid, coffee flower, and sambac. While not as coffee-centric as the other fragrances in this selection, the coffee note provides depth to the softness of the dried florals.
**Parfums de Marly**
Layton Eau de Parfum
Scent Type: Amber fougere
Notes: Apple, bergamot, lavender, jasmine, violet, geranium, vanilla, pink pepper, guaiac wood, patchouli, caramelized coffee
In search of a bright take on apple fragrances, I found Parfum de Marly's Layton Eau de Parfum, which incorporates a caramelized coffee note that adds depth and richness to the scent. While
