The journey began because I couldn't stop noticing the pronounced line developing between my eyebrows. I attribute it to unintentional resting face and poor eyesight, which both make me squint and furrow my brow frequently. Nevertheless, I went for it, loved the outcome, and moved on without regrets. Since then, I've committed to getting injections twice a year. Fortunately, the effects tend to last about six months for me, which is longer than the usual three to four months. However, Botox, Dysport, or any neurotoxin can be costly. If I can enhance, maintain, or even prolong the results, I'm all in. That’s where copper peptides come into play. I've seen a great deal of conversation about them online—particularly about how they are the ideal skincare ingredient for those receiving neurotoxin treatments. I was intrigued to find out if that was true. I was also curious about how they differ from other peptides. So, as any diligent beauty editor would do, I consulted the experts. Dr. Brendan Camp, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology, explains that copper peptides are tripeptides (combinations of three amino acids that function as highly effective cell messengers) connected with copper (yes, the same element you find in a penny). Natia Rufolo, FNP, NP-C, the founder of Injx by Nat Aesthetics and a certified aesthetic injector and PDO thread expert, adds that the association with copper is crucial to their effectiveness. "The copper component provides additional regenerative and antioxidant advantages, making them particularly useful for healing and enhancing skin firmness," she states. "Copper peptides aid in the support of collagen and elastin production, encourage skin repair, and improve overall skin strength and elasticity." In simpler terms, they help the skin appear plump, smooth, and youthful.

      Which Skin Types Should Use or Avoid Copper Peptides? The experts indicate that copper peptides are generally well-tolerated by most skin types. "I've found they perform well for almost all skin types, but they are particularly beneficial for aging, damaged, or compromised skin, as well as for those aiming to enhance firmness and texture without causing irritation," Rufolo notes. However, both Camp and Rufolo advise caution for individuals with exceptionally sensitive or reactive skin. (Camp suggests performing a patch test regardless of skin type.) "Copper peptides are typically well tolerated, but I’m cautious about using them on very sensitive or reactive skin, particularly if there is a compromised barrier or active inflammation," Rufolo says. "In such instances, I prefer to introduce them gradually or avoid them until the skin is more stable, as they can occasionally cause irritation when overused or layered with potent actives."

      Can Copper Peptides Truly Extend Botox Results? Now for the crucial question that has been on my mind for months: Can copper peptides genuinely enhance, maintain, and prolong the results of neurotoxins like Botox and Dysport? The experts affirm that they can, but they also clarify that there are limitations. "I wouldn’t say copper peptides actually extend the longevity of a neurotoxin, as there isn’t substantial clinical evidence to back that up," Rufolo explains. "What they can do is improve overall skin quality—such as texture, firmness, and healing—which can complement the effects of the toxin, making the skin appear smoother and healthier while the neurotoxin is in effect." Camp elaborates, "Copper peptides probably won’t enhance the results of neurotoxin injections, but they may complement the benefits of in-office cosmetic treatments since they can help address age-related changes, like fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots." In other words, while they can enhance and help maintain the effects of neurotoxins, they won’t necessarily prolong or amplify them.
