Stressed and Uneven Skin? I’m Familiar with It—This French Lotion Really Works
As a beauty editor, my skincare routine might be more detailed than most, but I strive to keep it as simple as possible. There are things to do and people to meet! I can't dedicate time to a lengthy 10-step routine every day. (That said, I do enjoy indulging in a full pampering session on leisurely Sunday mornings, though those occasions are becoming rare. I digress!) I aim to reflect this approach in my writing too. My role is to simplify the expansive beauty market, so I never recommend a treatment or tool without good reason. If I suggest incorporating something new into your regimen, you can be assured it offers benefits that your usual serum or moisturizer does not. This leads me to my latest recommendation: Neurae's Harmonie Treatment Lotion. It's lighter than a moisturizer but thicker than a toner, and this soothing liquid enhances the glow-boosting effects of my moisturizer. While it is technically an added step, it has significantly improved my stressed, problematic skin. Keep reading for all the details.

Let's clarify what makes treatment lotions different from other steps in a comprehensive skincare routine. These popular products in France and Asia, which can also be categorized as "essences" although they tend to have a thicker consistency, improve the absorption of subsequent active ingredients—almost like a skincare primer. In contrast to traditional toners here in the U.S., which often contain astringent elements to further purify the skin post-cleansing, these lightweight, milky solutions primarily focus on hydration, enabling potent serums to work more effectively. "Think of your skin as a dry sponge. When you pour a thick liquid onto a dry sponge, it struggles to absorb it. However, if you dampen the sponge first, it quickly soaks the liquid," explains Elise Létang, Neurae's development director. "Without this crucial preparation, your high-performance serums may not reach their full potential." It’s typical in the U.S. to jump straight to the "active" step post-cleansing, which might explain why treatment lotions don’t receive as much attention here. "In France, heavily influenced by Asian layering methods, we believe that skin needs to be properly primed and 'awakened' to perform optimally," she adds.
Neurae's formula utilizes biotech-derived high-molecular weight hyaluronic acid, plant-derived squalane, and mineral-rich vital water to provide a "pre-wet" effect, promoting optimal absorption of ingredients. Importantly, the Treatment Lotion is also quite potent, featuring neuro-ingredients (a signature of the brand) like eperua extract, alpine skullcap, and red indigo extract, which regulate skin cell communication and combat signs of stress such as dullness, inflammation, and fine lines. Even without the neuro-ingredients, I would still deem Neurae's Treatment Lotion essential for calming the skin. Its texture is luxurious—milky and lightweight, yet still rich. I’ve tried various French pharmacy lotions, but Neurae’s has a unique richness that feels refined. I recognize that sensory experience may often take a back seat to efficacy, but it’s vital to consider when investing in a luxury product. If a product doesn’t feel pleasant, I am less likely to incorporate it into my routine.
**My Experience and Results**
After cleansing and gently towel-drying my face (leaving it slightly damp, as recommended before applying humectants), I apply one to two pumps of Treatment Lotion to my palms and press it directly onto my face and neck. The formula leaves a soft dewy sheen, yet when my skin is extremely dry, it quickly absorbs the moisture—definitely a sign that this nourishing step is needed in my routine—with a velvety finish. I then continue with my hydrating serums and a generous layer of moisturizer to seal in the products.
If I'm exfoliating—typically with a mandelic acid-based product—I apply that first (as exfoliants work best on clean, dry skin), followed by the lotion and then my regular hydrators. The lotion essentially "re-wets" my skin to boost the effects of my hyaluronic acid-rich serums and creams, and I genuinely notice a difference since incorporating it into my routine. My skin appears brighter, more serene, and visibly bouncier after application. The redness on my cheeks and around my nose? It nearly vanishes in the "after" photo taken just after applying the Treatment Lotion. As evidenced in the photo, my skin also reflects light better, creating a subtle glow on my cheeks and forehead.
It's worth noting that the Treatment Lotion has a noticeable scent (something to consider if you prefer a fragrance-free routine), but I find the fragrance quite calming even though I have a very sensitive nose. This lotion is the only scented item in my routine—aside from Neurae's Harmonie
