I'm relocating to Paris for two months—here's the capsule wardrobe I'm bringing to blend in like a local.
"Paris is always a good idea." In my humble opinion, this sentiment couldn't be more accurate. Although it may sound cliché, there are few travel spots in the world that possess that special allure, which is why it remains a significant presence in the minds and travel plans of countless individuals. That said, I must acknowledge that the actual experience of being in Paris differs greatly from the romanticized version often portrayed in popular culture. Don’t misunderstand me: my affection for the city is so strong that I’m moving there for a brief two-month period. However, it's all too easy to get caught up in the dreamy expectations of your trip and overlook the reality—especially when it comes to packing for Paris. It’s common to want to bring along some of the more stereotypical items associated with the city: a striped top, a tweed ensemble, or possibly a little red beret. But I implore you, please resist that urge! From personal experience, there's nothing worse than stumbling through cobblestone streets in an uncomfortable outfit that screams "tourist." For both safety and style, it's much more effective to pack basic pieces that will allow you to blend in with the locals. But which specific items should be included in your capsule wardrobe? Fortunately, that's where my expertise comes into play. Since I'll be visiting Paris this spring, I've compiled my research on how to create a travel capsule wardrobe. Below, I’ve listed 10 essential pieces that are currently favored by stylish individuals, along with styling advice and shopping suggestions that will undoubtedly help you appear like a local (even if you aren’t). You don’t need to take every item on the list, but rest assured they’ll be in my own Calpak suitcase.
1. Trench Coat
Ah oui, trench coats! It’s hard to discuss timeless staples without including this classic outerwear. French women adore their trench coats, and it's easy to see why. Trench coats are not only practical for the city's unpredictable weather, but they also make you look effortlessly chic while sipping coffee at a café. Essentially, packing at least one trench coat (or wearing one while traveling) is essential when visiting Paris.
2. Foundational Layers
In addition to functional outerwear, it’s crucial to include a few foundational layers in your packing. While it may seem obvious, these basic pieces form the backbone of any French woman's wardrobe and are key to successfully blending in with locals. Whether you opt for a button-up shirt, tank top, cardigan, or T-shirt, choose layers that can be styled in multiple ways throughout your trip. Trust me, including these in your capsule will help capture the carefree spirit of the French.
3. Elevated Denim
Many individuals worry they need to dress up for their trip to Paris—not true! While it's best to avoid leggings in Les Jardins (unless you’re exercising), this doesn’t mean you need to overdo it. In fact, stylish locals can often be spotted in elevated jeans. Denim is a core element of a Parisian's wardrobe, making tailored pieces more approachable in everyday settings. The key to feeling—or at least looking—like a local lies in how you style your jeans, just like the French.
4. Ballet Flats
While there are countless unfounded fears, one of my biggest is unwittingly dressing like a tourist—this is why I usually shy away from sneakers in Paris. Although you could pull them off, if you share my aversion to standing out, you’ll want to consider ballet flats instead. These shoes are practically synonymous with French fashion and for good reason. They’re comfortable for wandering around the Palais-Royal Garden and stylish enough to complement nearly any outfit.
5. Statement Jewelry
It may seem contradictory, but a well-thought-out travel capsule shouldn't consist solely of basics. If you’re planning an extended stay in Paris (like I am), you’ll inevitably rewear foundational layers or jeans. The trick to keeping those staples from feeling stale? Statement jewelry. Accessories take up less space in your suitcase than other items, making them a practical choice. I suggest selecting a trendy piece, such as a beaded necklace or two-tone earrings, to elevate a simple top.
6. Day-to-Night Top
Those warm spring and summer days in Paris are unmatched, but dressing for them can be a challenge. What do you wear when your plans may range from relaxing by the Seine to dancing the night away? The answer is straightforward: bring a top that can easily transition from day to night. Having at least one blouse that can be dressed up or down at a moment's notice is sure to keep you looking stylish no matter your itinerary.
7. Relaxed Trousers
In the realm of elevated separates suitable for any occasion, there's another essential staple you’ll always find on a French woman: relaxed trousers. Packing a pair of loose trousers adds a touch of sophistication to even the simplest travel outfits. Whether paired with an oversized T-shirt for strolling
