A Fashion Designer's Guide to Sydney: Exploring Iconic Beaches and Trendy Wine Bars
Welcome to Locals Only. In this series, we are highlighting prominent locals in the fashion space to share a curated list of their top picks for sights, dining, and shopping in their home cities. They will provide recommendations that are off the beaten path, not typically found in standard guidebooks, resulting in concise mini guides that expose where the city's most stylish residents truly spend their time. Sydney is one city that has consistently captured my interest. Mornings might begin with a refreshing swim in the ocean along a sunlit shore and then seamlessly transition to sips of natural wine in a cozy bar just a short distance away. During my time in New York, I frequently encounter individuals from this enchanting city, and they exude a warm, approachable vibe. It appears to be a polished locale that remains unpretentious, outdoorsy yet effortlessly chic, and brimming with a style that feels lived-in rather than curated. Sydney also takes its time in revealing its treasures. Beyond the famous landmarks, there's a rhythm to the city that only locals truly know how to appreciate.
This is precisely why I sought insights from someone who experiences it every day. Introducing Lesleigh Jermanus, the founder of the resortwear label Alémais, whose designs reflect the vibrancy and charm of her hometown. Having resided in Sydney for almost two decades, she's perfected the art of enjoying a well-rounded day that seamlessly blends beach time, culture, and exceptional cuisine. Below, she shares her selection of the city's most stylish spots, from lesser-known beaches to the wine bars and boutiques that make Sydney a place you'll want to revisit time and again.
Where are you from originally, and how long have you lived in Sydney? I grew up in Brisbane, Queensland, and relocated to Sydney in 2007.
What are your favorite neighborhoods, and where do you tend to spend most of your time? One of my favorite areas is Surry Hills, where our studio headquarters are located. It's vibrant and full of creativity, with great cafés, small galleries, wine bars, and excellent restaurants lining the streets. There's always something happening. I also spend a lot of time by the coast near home. Bronte, Clovelly, and Coogee each have their unique charm, but they all possess a relaxed, community-oriented atmosphere that makes Sydney's beaches feel special.
What does a typical day off look like for you? I enjoy spending time with my partner, Chris, and our son, Bowie. We'll visit a local market and stroll through Centennial Park. We're also passionate about gardening and growing vegetables in our backyard. Our son loves the slow process of watching things grow—a wonderful way for us to connect. Family time is extremely important to me. Amid busy studio days and travel, these leisurely moments together are what I cherish most.
If you had to plan the perfect afternoon for someone visiting the city with limited time, where would you recommend they go, and what would their afternoon look like? I would keep it inner-city, walkable, and full of character—exploring the kinds of places that instantly convey the city's vibe.
See: Visit the Art Gallery of NSW. They always have exciting exhibitions, and the architecture of the new Naala Badu building is worth the trip. Plus, there are fantastic views of Sydney Harbour nearby.
See: Sydney's beautiful beaches! I particularly enjoy the hidden harbor bays found throughout the Eastern Suburbs—serene spots that feel far removed from the city, perfect for sunset. Redleaf is especially picturesque, or Camp Cove for something a bit off the beaten path that’s worth the trek!
Eat: Sean’s is a true Sydney classic. Located right on the beachfront in Bondi, it offers a farm-to-table menu that changes nearly every day. The decor, featuring shells, transports you into a beach shack, making it the kind of meal that captures Sydney's essence in one sitting.
Experience: If you have the time, catch a show at the Sydney Opera House. It’s a world-class venue that always leaves you feeling uplifted.
Dance: If you're looking for some late-night fun, head to The Caterpillar Club in the city or venture to the Pleasure Club in Newtown in the inner west.
Stay: Paramount Hotel in Surry Hills—my favorite hotel in Sydney. It's right across from our design studio and offers everything you need. It has a fantastic café, A.P Bakery on the rooftop, and the Golden Age Cinema below is an ideal spot for a drink after a long day of exploration, or you can enjoy the best room service in town from Poly nearby.
As a fashion designer, you must know all the best shopping spots. Where would you suggest a close friend go? AXL Studio in Potts Point is a true hidden gem. The owner has an incredible eye, and her curation of vintage finds is always spot-on. I’ve been visiting for years and never fail to leave with something special. I once found an
