Dermatologists Share the Best Skincare Routine to Combat Signs of Aging—Including Wrinkles and Dark Spots.
While there are numerous skincare products available, an effective routine doesn’t have to be overly complicated. This is particularly true for individuals with mature skin who are seeking to address common issues like fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots. As our skin changes, so too should our skincare regimen. Even though you may not require a multitude of products, it's essential to find the right formulations. I've been closely observing my mother's journey as she navigates dryness and new sensitivities, which has heightened my awareness of how fragile our skin becomes with age. Consequently, I've been interested in discovering what mature skin requires to continue thriving. To learn more, I consulted leading board-certified dermatologists Dendy Engelman, MD, and Anetta Reszko, MD, for a comprehensive step-by-step anti-aging skincare routine for both morning and night.
**Morning Skincare Routine**
**Step 1: Cleanser**
Before applying any creams or serums, it's crucial to start with a clean slate using a cleanser. "An effective anti-aging morning routine should aim to protect the skin from environmental damage while enhancing hydration and barrier function," notes Reszko. "Cleansing eliminates excess oil, sweat, and debris that accumulate overnight without harming the skin barrier." For an ideal formula, Engelman emphasizes the importance of ingredients like glycerin, ceramides, and soothing botanical extracts.
**Step 2 (Optional): Face Mist**
This step is not mandatory, but if you enjoy using a face mist, now is the time to apply it. "A hydrating mist can help restore moisture and prep the skin for subsequent products, especially during the hot summer months when heat and sun exposure can lead to dehydration," Reszko explains. She suggests Bioeffect's Egf Essence for a lightweight formula that leaves skin feeling soft and hydrated.
**Step 3: Serum**
Once your skin is clean, apply a toner or serum for an antioxidant boost. "Serums are a critical part of the morning routine as ingredients such as vitamin C, vitamin E, ferulic acid, and other antioxidant complexes shield the skin from oxidative stress caused by UV exposure and environmental pollutants, while also promoting collagen health and skin radiance," Reszko clarifies. She highly recommends the SKORR Anti-Ox Serum with vitamin C and E.
**Step 4: Eye Cream**
If eye cream has been absent from your routine, this step is essential. Many regular face moisturizers are not suitable for the delicate skin around the eyes, making it crucial to select specific formulations. "The skin around the eyes is thinner and tends to show signs of aging first," Engelman points out. "Look for products featuring peptides, caffeine, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide to hydrate, smooth, and refresh the eye area."
**Step 5: Moisturizer**
This step is a must for everyone. While there are many options available, certain ingredients should be prioritized. "A good moisturizer helps maintain a healthy skin barrier, enhances hydration, and supports the overall resilience of the skin," Engelman states. "Seek out ingredients like ceramides, peptides, hyaluronic acid, and nourishing lipids." For optimal results, Reszko recommends Augustinus Bader's The Cream.
**Step 6: Sunscreen**
Regardless of age or skin issues, sunscreen is essential. Daily application can prevent signs of premature aging and further skin damage. "Daily sunscreen is the most crucial anti-aging product in any skincare regimen because it protects against UV-induced collagen breakdown, hyperpigmentation, and premature aging," Reszko advises, recommending ISDIN's Eryfotona Ageless SPF 50. Engelman adds that it's best to select a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or higher, as endorsed by The American Academy of Dermatology.
**Nighttime Routine**
**Step 1: Cleanser**
Though some people prefer to cleanse just once a day, both experts agree that cleansing twice provides a good opportunity to eliminate the dirt that builds up on your face throughout the day. "Cleansing at night removes sunscreen, makeup, pollution, and daily residues, creating a clean slate for your treatment products," Engelman explains. "Double cleansing can be particularly beneficial for those who wear makeup or water-resistant sunscreen."
**Step 2: Toner**
A toner or treatment serum should again follow the cleanser. "Skin naturally enters repair mode overnight, making this the perfect time for targeted treatments," Engelman says. "Look for ingredients like peptides, growth factors, niacinamide, antioxidants, and hydrating actives that support firmness, texture, and overall skin quality." She recommends ELM Biosciences' A30 Elemental Serum as an excellent option for enhancing skin health and fostering a stronger, more resilient complexion.
**Step 3: Eye Cream**
Applying eye cream before bed can help diminish fine lines and enhance plumpness. "Overnight hydration supports the delicate eye area and reduces the
