5 Essential Tips for Purchasing Vintage Chanel, Straight from Fashion Experts Who Acquire It
If there is one brand and designer that has significantly influenced the fashion industry since the highly anticipated debut collections last September, it is Matthieu Blazy for Chanel. This may seem apparent, but considering you cannot scroll through your Instagram feed, read a 2026 trend report, or even visit your favorite high street shops without encountering Blazy's designs, it highlights the undeniable presence of his work in fashion today. If more proof is needed, Lyst’s Q1 Index for 2026 ranked Chanel as the top brand for the year, and it’s clear to see why. From his highly coveted handbags, which had influencers, stylists, and editors nearly fighting over them in stores, to the beloved ready-to-wear collections debuted in Paris and Biarritz, as well as the controversial ‘naked’ sandals from the Cruise show that went viral, the fashion industry is currently all about Blazy.
Chanel's runway looks have showcased Matthieu Blazy’s modern take on the classic Chanel tweed jacket across various collections from spring/summer 2026 to present day. The French luxury brand has become so sought after that it’s no surprise that people who cannot afford new Chanel or cannot find it even if they could are turning to resale sites for new pieces, vintage accessories, and collector's items. Although there are many vintage enthusiasts (me included), it seems to have taken some time for the wider world to embrace this market, which once felt niche. However, with the growing popularity and convenience of platforms like Vinted, Depop, eBay, and Vestiaire, it’s not surprising that second-hand shopping has become much more mainstream. Vinted has even recently been named the UK's third-largest retailer, surpassing M&S, H&M, and Zara.

Many fashion insiders and celebrities have been spotted with vintage Chanel Flap bags that first appeared in the 1950s, alongside the iconic Cambon bag and those Y2K ballet pumps that were favorites of Lauren Conrad, Paris Hilton, and Nicole Richie in the early 2000s. Consequently, it would be remiss not to mention Karl Lagerfeld when discussing Chanel's archive, as he was the artistic director from 1983 until his death in 2019 and produced some of the most revered collections, campaigns, and runway shows in fashion history. The legacy, which was also established by Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel, has positioned Chanel as a consistently valuable investment item over time—similar to art, fine jewelry, or watches. Vestiaire has reported that Chanel is the top brand for investment value on its platform, boasting a "Vestiaire Value Ranking" of 1404 points, surpassing Louis Vuitton (1227) and Hermès (1156).

As an enthusiastic second-hand shopper (I actually just bought my first Chanel bag this year on eBay), I often find it perplexing why some people do not share the excitement of vintage shopping. When I ask, I receive the same responses: the belief that it requires a lot of effort, the largely misunderstood notion that all second-hand items are too worn or in poor condition, and a lack of understanding of what to look for or how to invest. Fortunately, I have some expert tips that may be helpful.
Which Chanel Items are Trending on the Second-Hand Market?
(Image credit: @camillecharriere, @jesscheng, @rubylynn)Amy Bannerman, eBay’s pre-loved style director, mentions that there have been numerous requests for the classic Chanel jacket at their archive, stating “Matthieu Blazy’s new collection is very ‘of the moment’ and has created a competitive shopping environment, but it only illustrates that these classic pieces endure over time.” In addition to the classic Chanel jacket, eBay has reported a 131% month-on-month increase in searches for the term “Chanel bowling bag” since December 2025, highlighting interest in styles from the early to mid-2000s. Other items from this era include the Cambon bag, Flap bag styles in metallic and glossy leather finishes, as well as quilted ballet flats with the XXL monogram, which are often seen in my feed these days. Additionally, after a period of subdued luxury, maximalism is making a comeback (thanks to Blazy, of course). As such, we expect a resurgence of logos as we approach autumn and 2027, and one can't think of a more iconic logo than Chanel's interlocking double 'C'.
