Lex Scott Davis discusses her entry into the Suits universe and the iconic fashion of her character.

When the legal drama Suits became available on Netflix in 2023—four years after concluding its nine-season run on USA Network—it experienced an incredible resurgence, amassing 57.5 billion minutes of viewership, as reported by Nielsen ratings. The show broke records for several months, establishing itself as a pop culture sensation and the most-watched series on streaming platforms that year, a noteworthy accomplishment indeed. A spin-off was only a matter of time. Actress Lex Scott Davis (known for Ricky Stanicky and Florida Man) joined the Suits fan community during its Netflix revival. Upon receiving an audition for Suits LA, NBC's spin-off set in the high-stakes realm of entertainment law, she decided to watch the pilot to grasp the show's atmosphere and tone. What started as one episode turned into two, then three, and rather than focusing on her lines, she ended up binge-watching the entire first season.

Scott Davis attributes Suits' remarkable success to its character-driven narrative, which makes viewers deeply invested in the ensemble of attractive, ambitious lawyers engaged in corporate chess. Suits LA aspires to capture that same passion with a brand-new cast of determined lawyers led by Ted Black (Stephen Amell), a former federal prosecutor from New York who relocates to Los Angeles to seek a fresh start as a formidable entertainment lawyer. Accompanying him are Stuart Lane (Josh McDermitt), his best friend and criminal attorney, plus their promising mentees, Rick Dodsen (Bryan Greenberg) and Erica Rollins (Scott Davis), who compete for the coveted title of "head of entertainment." With a blend of enticing drama, sexual tension, and notable guest appearances (such as Victoria Justice and Brian Baumgartner), this expanded universe promises to be a highly enjoyable watch.

Just as audiences adored Gina Torres as the powerful Jessica Pearson in Suits, Scott Davis stands out in the predominantly male environment of Suits LA—dressed in Tom Ford and Valentino.

How did you first learn about the Suits spin-off?

As actors, we are constantly auditioning more than we are working. This opportunity, like any other audition, came through my team. They informed me, "You've heard of Suits, right? They're reviving it and creating a spin-off." My response was, "When is the tape due? How many pages?" Eventually, they invited me to meet Aaron Korsh, the creator, and producer Dave Bartis in person, which is a rare opportunity. That experience in itself was fantastic. While self-tapes are great—especially since the industry has shifted post-COVID—I prefer performing in front of a live audience. That's part of being a performer.

I will always remember my audition day. When I entered the room, everyone was friendly, but initially had neutral expressions. To break the ice, I said, "I'm just thrilled to be here in person. Thank you all for being at work today. This is amazing—it's a dream come true for me." The audition process took some time as we explored various interpretations of this character and played with different scenes, which felt comprehensive. In total, I returned four times, with each round focused on refining, collaborating, and discovering, which is a dream scenario for an actor. I truly enjoyed the entire process from the beginning.

Do you have a sense of when you've nailed an audition in the room?

It's humorous because the answer is both yes and no. I'm typically quite optimistic, so by the end of the first audition, I already felt like I had succeeded. I had the chance to connect with people, which was fulfilling. After that, I relaxed and went about my day. When I received the callback, I met Victoria Mahoney, who directed the pilot, and it felt very good, unique, and connected. After that second audition, I even took a selfie outside the casting office to capture the moment. In hindsight, I believe that was when I sensed I would get the role. Interestingly, that picture reminded me of a year ago just a few weeks ago, and I thought, "There it is." That was when I instinctively knew something special was developing.

You portray Erica Rollins, who is competing for the head of entertainment title at Black Lane. As an actor with entertainment lawyers on your team, how did your research for the role come together, and who inspired you?

The great aspect of this character is that I've previously played lawyers, but since this involves entertainment law, it doesn't heavily focus on legal jargon. My research has come from observing strong women in my life, including Gina Torres's performance as Pearson in the original Suits.

I drew inspiration from women I know, like my mom, who worked as a paralegal before I was born and continues to rise in her law firm today, so I have an understanding of that world. Having entertainment lawyers as part of my own team as an actor also made it
