Observed on the Streets of L.A.: The Most Stylish Shoe Trend to Pair with Black Pants
New York City once led the way in off-duty model fashion, but I believe Los Angeles has taken the crown. Nowadays, whether residing in L.A. or just passing through, models tend to adopt a relaxed vibe in the California city, resulting in a street style that's more accessible and reflective of their true preferences. In contrast, New York features more distinct runway styles or rare vintage items, which, while appreciated, aren't particularly casual.
Recent appearances by Kaia Gerber and Kendall Jenner in L.A. serve as evidence for my perspective. Both were seen around the city in comparable outfits that included two key elements: black trousers and ballet flats. While their ensembles weren't groundbreaking or particularly jaw-dropping, they felt authentic. These are the types of outfits I would wear for similar daily tasks, prompting me to save both looks for inspiration.
On Kaia Gerber: Repetto Cendrillon Ballerina Flats ($380)
Gerber often wears her black ballet flats from the French brand Repetto, almost to the point where they should sponsor her. She paired them effortlessly with a black sweater and trousers, completing her look with glasses and a black tote bag. Her outfit embodies the essence of model off-duty style, reminiscent of her mother Cindy Crawford’s simpler approach to styling after runway shows and during fittings or castings.
On Kendall Jenner: The Row top, sweater, trousers, and Marlo Bag ($4300)
Jenner’s outfit echoed Gerber’s, substituting the heavier knit for a gray sweater-vest and layered tee, both from The Row’s Summer 2025 collection. To finish her daytime look, she added black sunglasses and The Row's Marlo Bag, which is currently sold out—an appealing alternative for those seeking something a bit less mainstream.
It's clear that there's a stylish, model-endorsed footwear option to pair with black trousers, and it's not sneakers. Below, you can shop a range of elegant ballet flats and pants to complement your own outfits.

Apologies, sneakers—this isn't your moment.
