A few months back, I found myself hesitating over the checkout button on a site known for its popular TikTok knockoff designer items. After my moment of weakness, I realized that, despite thinking I would have enough money for a designer bag by my 30s, the route to owning a bag I truly loved wasn't through buying a fake. Coming from a background without a legacy of luxury handbags or sufficient funds to buy one, I decided to explore the realm of mid-range bags instead.
As a stylist with years of experience, I understand that creating stylish, affordable handbags is feasible. Are designer brands charging exorbitant prices solely for their superior craftsmanship, or is it more about the brand name attached to them? TikTok creator Volkan Yilmaz, known on the app as Tanner Leatherstein, has caught the attention of over a million users as he essentially dissects luxury items by analyzing their quality. After watching several eye-opening videos of Leatherstein evaluating designer bags, it became clear that higher prices do not always mean higher quality.
With designer handbag prices soaring—such as the nearly doubled price of the Chanel Classic Flap bag in the last five years—more affordable bag brands are starting to shine. Excited by the realization that I didn’t have to sacrifice my savings for a long-lasting bag, I set out to discover the best mid-range bags available. Here are my current favorites:
DeMellier London
Known for blending traditional and contemporary styles, this London-based brand creates ethically made leather bags that are modern yet timeless. A portion of every purchase helps fund vaccinations and medical treatments for children in need through their "A Bag, A Life" initiative.
Polène
Polène has gained popularity in recent years thanks to their unique designs that merge minimalism with creativity and excellent craftsmanship. I'm currently interested in the Numéro Neuf, while the Cyme bag has also been trending on TikTok.
Behno New York
Behno, which means "sisters" in Hindi, was established to enhance working conditions in the textile industry. Today, Behno is recognized worldwide as a sustainable, minimal luxury brand.
Songmont
Drawing from rich cultural heritage, Songmont provides some of the most stylish mid-range bags available. From mini duffles to fun bucket bags, this brand has captured my attention.
Manu Atelier
With bags spotted on A-list celebrities like Taylor Swift and Hailey Bieber, Manu Atelier has quickly gained popularity recently. It resembles The Row but without the hefty price tag.
Staud
While Staud is well-known for their recognizable Moon and Tommy Bags, their lesser-known options are also worth exploring.
Dragon Diffusion
Dragon Diffusion specializes in hand-woven leather bags, produced on demand, which may take up to 10 weeks to receive. However, their beautiful designs make the wait worthwhile.
Ganni
Ganni is a brand that radiates "fun" with every release. In terms of handbags, they aren’t afraid to experiment with unconventional prints, colors, and materials. I personally own the Bou Bag, and it’s been one of my best purchases so far.
Marge Sherwood
Marge Sherwood has captivated me ever since I first saw the gorgeous Baguette Bag a few months back. The Outpocket Hobo Bag has a delightful futuristic vibe reminiscent of Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century.
Coperni
The first time I encountered a Coperni bag, specifically the Mini Swipe Bag, I thought my friend had brought a kettlebell to dinner. After a good laugh, I became fascinated by Coperni’s clever bag designs, many inspired by the iPhone’s swipe button.
Cult Gaia
You’ll never forget a Cult Gaia bag, and you can likely spot one of their distinctive designs from afar. Although they’re well-known for their sculptural evening bags, I am particularly fond of their latest line of simple, everyday styles.
By Far
When I recently came across a picture of Rita Ora, I quickly closed Instagram to find out where I could purchase the bag she was carrying. It was no surprise that it was by By Far, a brand recognized for its playful and innovative statement designs.
