These contentious ballerina flats have made their way onto every New Yorker's wish list thanks to Chloë Sevigny.

As a fashion editor, one of my favorite types of messages to receive is a set of blurry, hard-to-read photos of accessories or clothing items from friends who are eager to find out what they are. Sometimes, these are candid shots of strangers taken on the street; other times, they're screenshots from social media. The questions I usually get are variations of: “What brand is this?” “Where can I find something similar?” “Is this vintage?” It's rewarding to know they trust my judgment—and I enjoy the playful challenge of figuring out fashion clues. It's particularly gratifying when they share something I can immediately identify, allowing us both to experience quick satisfaction. I can feel good about recognizing the item, while they get the information they need right away. This occurred several times when Chloë Sevigny frequently wore a pair of chunky black lace-up ballerina flats in recent months. That specific style was the Ecco Biom C-Trails, created by her friend and former Chloé Creative Director Natacha Ramsay-Levi.

Many of my friends reached out to inquire about the shoes, and I told them yes each time, providing details while also expressing my frustration. The first time I saw Sevigny wearing them, I immediately researched to find out who designed them. Upon discovering the details, I attempted to purchase a pair—but, unfortunately, they were already sold out. My responses to my curious friends went a bit like this: “Yes, they’re by Ecco. They cost $250, but they’re sold out. I know—I need them badly.”

Now, after what feels like an eternity, the shoes are finally back in stock—and they even come in a new white colorway. Sevigny is also modeling them for the brand’s latest Icons That Last campaign. When I spoke with her earlier this week, she mentioned that the entire collaboration came about quite organically, as she already was a fan of the shoes. “The company noticed that I kept being photographed in the shoes,” she explained. “There was a lot of interest. They saw that as a chance to reach a specific audience they hadn’t tapped into before. They asked me to be part of the campaign, and I invited my friends. Haley Wollens styled it, and Brianna Capozzi took the photos. We simply aimed to create fun images. They were a bit sexy… we wanted to promote a fashion fantasy that we both love and believe in. We shot it in L.A. at this incredible house, and it was a lot of fun.”

Regarding the new shoes from the spring/summer 2025 collection that just launched, she's particularly enthusiastic about the lighter colorway of her favored ballerina style. “I've often relied on a black shoe to ground an outfit. I think having this pale, toned shoe will brighten up every outfit... it's going to be an exciting challenge. A new experience for me!”

While she is known as a style icon for her unique way of wearing clothes, which feels distinctly her own, she also prioritizes practicality. That might be the reason she always looks effortlessly cool—she chooses pieces she genuinely enjoys wearing. She isn't dressing a certain way for appearances; instead, she embraces clothing that reflects her true self.

She shared that she is drawn to comfortable shoes. “That’s what boosts your confidence. Ecco created an amazing heavy boot I wore all winter that had a slight heel—it elevated me off the ground, kept me warm, and was comfy! It didn’t make my feet hurt. That really helps to anchor an outfit for me.”

The decision-making process for selecting her shoes each day is just as practical. “It’s always about the weather first, then considering what I’ll be doing. Am I going to be walking a lot? Visiting the playground? Do I need to dash around? Am I navigating the subway? Or am I just getting into my car? My choices depend on my activities and the weather. That’s why Ecco is so great—they're versatile for any situation. If an unexpected event comes up, you’re prepared.”

Now that the chunky Ecco ballerina shoes are available again, I’m the one sending messages to everyone in my circle like an enthusiastic town crier: “They’re back! They’re here!” But with Chloë fronting the campaign, everyone will know exactly where to find them, eliminating the need for any more inquiry texts.
