Observed on the Streets of L.A.: The Most Stylish Shoe Trend to Pair with Black Pants
New York City once showcased the finest off-duty model style, but in my opinion, Los Angeles has taken that title. Nowadays, whether residing in L.A. or just passing through, models often adopt a more relaxed vibe in the California city, resulting in a laid-back street style that’s easier to emulate and more reflective of their true preferences. In contrast, New York tends to feature more special runway presentations or unique, historical pieces, which I certainly admire as a fashion enthusiast, but they are not exactly casual.
The latest outfits of Kaia Gerber and Kendall Jenner in L.A. serve as strong evidence for my argument. Both were recently seen around the city in similar ensembles consisting of two main elements: black trousers and ballet flats. Their outfits may not have been shocking or particularly awe-inspiring, but they felt authentic. They represent the kind of outfits I would choose for running similar errands, which is why I've saved them for future inspiration.
On Kaia Gerber: She could practically be a spokesperson for Repetto given her frequent wear of their black ballet flats. She paired them effortlessly with a black sweater and trousers, complemented by glasses and a black tote bag. Everything about her ensemble exudes off-duty model vibes, reminiscent of her mom, Cindy Crawford’s modeling era, when simplicity was key for styling after shows and during fittings or castings.
On Kendall Jenner: She styled her black trousers and ballet flats in a similar fashion, swapping Gerber's heavier knit for a gray sweater-vest layered over a tee, both from The Row’s Summer 2025 collection. To complete her daytime look, she added black sunglasses and The Row's sold-out Marlo Bag, which is an excellent alternative for anyone seeking something a bit less mainstream.
Clearly, there’s a fashionable and model-approved footwear option to pair with black trousers, and it isn’t sneakers. Below are various chic ballet flats and trousers to consider.
