While experimenting with new seasonal nail colors can be fun, there are times when you crave your dependable, emotional support shade. Over the years, I’ve had a few favorites: a beautiful purple-y mauve in my early 20s, OPI’s Ballet Slippers when I discovered it’s favored by the Royal Family, and more recently, any shade of green. I would argue that one of the most heartbreaking experiences for nail enthusiasts is arriving at their monthly manicure appointment eager to get their go-to shade only to discover that the brand has discontinued it or, even worse, changed the formula so it looks different from the original.
This is currently the situation for fans of OPI Cajun Shrimp. Reports indicate that OPI has altered this classic, bright coral-red hue into a near-neon, pinky-red. TikTok user @fairy.godmorgan recounted her recent salon visit, where she was not only surprised but her usual nail artist immediately recognized her disappointment when she requested her “normal” color.
Although Morgan quickly noticed the difference in shade, she decided to try the new Cajun Shrimp anyway—how bad could it possibly be? It turns out, quite a lot. When she returned home after her appointment, it became clear that OPI was in trouble. Her boyfriend pointed out that it was the wrong color. Beyond saying “looks nice! It has sparkles!” my husband has never been able to distinguish between my manicures, so this was telling. Morgan summed it up well: the fact that a man can identify the difference between two shades of red is concerning for OPI.
The following day, Morgan was still dissatisfied with the color, saying, “It feels like it is 2004 and we are at the mall getting a Jamba Juice.” After reviewing the evidence, I can’t disagree. Another TikTok user, @vintage_dusties, posted a side-by-side comparison of the original shade and the new one.
So, what's a girl to do? Fortunately, the comments on Morgan’s video are filled with suggestions for alternative shades. If you're a Cajun Shrimp fan facing the same issue, consider asking your nail artist to swatch OPI’s Aloha, OPI’s We Seafood and Eat It, DND’s Lava, or DND’s Candy Cane.
