I'm a Shopping Editor—Here’s What I’m Buying at Nordstrom (and What I’m Avoiding)
Even outside of work, one of my favorite activities when I’m feeling bored is online shopping—a hobby I prefer to think of as research. Now that the weather in New York is finally warming up, I've been considering what I want to add to my closet. I enjoy seeking inspiration before making purchases, which often leads me to browsing Nordstrom. Spring weather in the city is famously unpredictable, with sudden rain and unexpectedly hot afternoons, so versatility is essential. Beyond the practical aspects, I’m looking to experiment with different silhouettes, acquire new basics, and possibly include some bold choices. After spending hours browsing Nordstrom, here’s what I plan to buy—and what I’ll pass on.
**What I’m Buying: Halter-Neck Tops**
**What I’m Skipping: Off-the-Shoulder Tops**
If anyone has been a fan of off-the-shoulder tops and dresses over the last few years, it’s me. Even though I find them visually appealing, I often experience them as somewhat impractical because they seem to restrict my arm movements. They either tend to ride up and shift, requiring continual adjustments. This season, I’ve chosen to focus on my true fashion love: halters.
- Helmut Lang: Harness Detail Knit Halter Top
- BDG Urban Outfitters: Je T'aime Lace Trim Halter Top
- MANGO: Halter Linen Blend Maxi Dress
- Nocturne: Halter Neck Maxi Dress
- Cotton On: All Day V Neck Halter
**What I’m Buying: Tank Tops**
**What I’m Skipping: T-Shirts**
To be clear, I enjoy lounging on the couch or sleeping in an oversized T-shirt, but I’ve always preferred tank tops for my basics. I love having them to pair with skirts in the warm weather or to wear at home all year round. I feel like I can never have too many of them. This first one by Hanro became iconic after Nicole Kidman wore it in *Eyes Wide Shut*.
- Hanro: Seamless V-Neck Cotton Camisole
- Courrèges: Logo Rib Tank Top
- BDG Urban Outfitters: Je T’aime Camisole
- Open Edit: Boat Neck Sleeveless Top
- Cotton On: Byron Scoop Cami
**What I’m Buying: Asymmetric Cuts**
**What I’m Skipping: Ruffles**
Perhaps I wore too many ruffles during my childhood, but I haven’t embraced their recent resurgence. I really like asymmetrical hems when I want to elevate a piece artistically.
- MANGO: Asymmetric Draped Chiffon Gown
- MANGO: Julia Asymmetric Trench Coat
- maje: Asymmetric Knit Maxi Dress
**What I’m Buying: Long Skirts**
**What I’m Skipping: Miniskirts**
While I think I’ll always want to wear miniskirts, I’ve realized my wardrobe is missing long skirts. They seem a bit more refined yet still comfortable and effortless. Plus, white cotton skirts are quintessential for spring and summer.
- LIONESS: Low Rise Semisheer Skirt
- Open Edit: Cotton Poplin Maxi Skirt
- Topshop: A-Line Denim Maxi Skirt
**What I’m Buying: Drop-Waist Dresses**
**What I’m Skipping: Bubble Dresses**
As fashion trends come and go, not every style fits with my aesthetic. For example, I haven’t connected with the bubble dress trend. Instead, I’ve gained a newfound appreciation for drop-waist dresses. I love how elegant and flattering they are.
- Reformation: Cyra Drop Waist Maxi Dress
- STAUD: Mariana Strapless Maxi Dress
- Topshop: Shirred Bodice Maxi Dress
- MM: Ettore Drop Waist Sleeveless Maxi Dress
**What I’m Buying: Jellies**
**What I’m Skipping: Technical Sneakers**
Since I’m generally not a sneaker person, my Salomon pair has become my designated gym shoes. For footwear, I’ve been eyeing jellies. These nostalgic shoes have a playful quality that feels sweet and whimsical, and I enjoy adding a bit of fun to my outfits. As someone who typically opts for anti-trend choices, some trends are just enjoyable—and it’s nice to embrace the fun.
- Jeffrey Campbell: Day Off Flat
- Melissa: Possession Jelly Fisherman Sandal
- Vince: Barcelona Jelly Cage Mule
- Tory Burch: Mellow Mary Jane Jelly Mule
