From Prada to Zara—30 Spring Pieces I Packed for a 12-Day Trip to Tokyo
If you know me, you’re aware that I would drop anything at a moment's notice to travel to Japan. I spent over two and a half years living in Tokyo, and honestly, I find myself wanting to return every single day. The food, the sights, the fashion… Tokyo is unquestionably my happy place. So when my now-fiancée surprised me with a trip during cherry blossom season with just two weeks' notice, I felt an internal rush of panic. I knew that every outfit I wore for our last-minute trip had to be flawless. As a Virgo Moon, this sent me into a full-blown frenzy. For days before leaving, I frantically packed and unpacked my Rimowa suitcases filled with clothes. Satin dresses, white mini skirts, luxury bags, and high heels were part of my initial selection, all meticulously organized and documented in various spreadsheets and styling PowerPoint presentations. My Close Friends story on Instagram featured not one, not two, but three manic moments where I shared multiple outfits in pursuit of great fashion.
After seeking advice from a few stylist friends, they all echoed the same sentiment: when traveling, especially for significant occasions, it’s best to wear clothes that you feel comfortable in. Traveling should involve risks, but not in terms of fashion choices. I took this wisdom to heart and revised my packing strategy. Instead of concentrating on what I assumed would look good, I filled my suitcase with things I knew I would feel great in—comfortable barrel-leg jeans, voluminous skirts, and cozy knits suitable for exploring Tokyo. Their consensus was spot on—my comfort was priority, and my outfits came second, something I’m very grateful for in retrospect. I enjoyed my trip and our special moment without fretting about my appearance on one of the best days of my life so far.
Now that I’m back in New York with a suitcase full of vintage finds from Shimokitazawa (and an engagement ring, too!), I can confidently say my packing skills have improved significantly. So has my ability to prioritize what truly matters: the memories, rather than just the outfits. Below, scroll through to see all the beautiful spring items I packed for my trip to Tokyo.
A barn jacket is always a solid choice.
Aligne
Natalie Elasticated Cotton Midi Skirt
For a simple, carefree spring look, a white cotton skirt is a must-have.
Bottega Veneta
Long Andiamo Intrecciato Leather Clutch
I must admit I've been holding onto this bag since last summer. It finally made its debut for my bridal phase, but essentially, white bags scream spring and summer to me.
This red polo paired with black pants made me feel fantastic. Plus, it's incredibly easy to style.
Prada
Medium Brushed-Leather Tote Bag
Prada is always an excellent choice.
Mango
Long Semi-Transparent Cape
I know this cape might be a bit impractical, but when I wore it with a simple white tank and straight-leg black pants to dinner, a local in Kichijoji actually stopped me on the street to ask where it was from.
Heaven Mayhem
Sloane Black
Now that these Heaven Mayhem sunglasses are available for purchase, I'm proud to say I've adored them for months. After wearing them around New York City, I knew I had to pack them for Tokyo.
Afrm
Ettie Essential Pant
Yes, I can confirm that capri pants are still extremely trendy for 2025.
Mirror Palais
Double Cowl-Neck Drop-Waist Silk Chiffon Midi Dress
This might be a bit embarrassing, but as soon as I heard about the trip, I had a feeling I’d be getting engaged. I messaged a dear friend who was able to get this Mirror Palais dress as a gift for me from Anthropologie. While this drop-waist silk chiffon dress might seem too bridal at first glance, it’s honestly perfect for a formal spring outing. The open back detail and neck scarf elevate it from simple to absolutely stunning.
The reason these shoes are so ideal is literally in the name—everyone in Japan is embracing the new Adidas Tokyo silhouette.
Relax Lacrosse x Lisa Says Gah
Bows & Rose Lacrosse Pants in Red/Pink
Dissh
Abigail Black Hybrid Long Sleeve Midi Dress
I always like to include a simple black dress while traveling since it suits every occasion. This easy-to-pack (and nearly wrinkle-proof!) Dissh dress was perfect for repeated wear during all our celebratory omakase dinners.
Mango
Linen-Blend Knitted Sweater
Haven’t you heard? Powder pink is the color of the season.
Frankie Shop
Pelly Trench in Sage
Everyone probably has a classic khaki trench in their wardrobe, but do you have a stylish greenish-gray one? Likely not.
It's the little things in life.
Anthropologie
