Outside of a short-lived fascination with vibrant French tips, I can hardly recall the last time I visited my nail salon for a French manicure. Despite its classic appeal, it has always seemed a bit too formal for my taste, except for weddings and special occasions. However, a modern twist is causing me to completely reconsider my views on the manicure I typically associate with my mother and grandmother. Introducing: the micro French.
Given my short nail beds (and relatively short nails), my French manicures usually turn out to be about 90 percent tip and only 10 percent nail. The micro French addresses this issue with its ultra-thin line, providing a more subtle look and the appearance of elongated nail beds. I’m eager to head to the salon for a micro French manicure, and here are the inspiration images I'll be sharing with my nail artist.
What is a micro French manicure?
A micro French manicure is precisely what it sounds like: a French manicure featuring an exceptionally thin line of polish at the tip of the nail. Naturally, not all micro French manicures are equally “micro.” You could opt for a micro French mani with a barely visible polish line or one that’s just slightly narrower than the traditional French. Regardless, this style is particularly suitable for those of us who appreciate the French manicure look but want a version that suits shorter nails.
How to do a micro French manicure
If you plan to request a micro French manicure at the salon, choose a base color that enhances your natural nails and follow it with your preferred tip color. You can either specify "micro French mani" or simply ask for an ultra-thin French manicure.
For those wanting to try it at home, start with a base coat of your choice before moving on to the French tip. For the micro French design, having a tiny brush handy will help you create the ultra-thin line along your nail tips. You can use another small brush with some polish remover to tidy up any errors.
