Confirmed: These Overlooked Hair Trends Are About to Make a Return
While some hair trends vanish as quickly as they appear, many are undeniably cyclical. Occasionally, a truly innovative haircut or color trend resonates with the spirit of the time, but as a beauty editor, what I find most fascinating about analyzing red-carpet hairstyles is identifying the throwback inspirations and legendary looks that influenced them. Currently, nostalgia is a significant source of inspiration for the latest major hair trends. From revival of iconic ‘90s styles to nods to the subcultural hairstyles of the 2000s, these resurgent trends may initially evoke a sense of nostalgia, but a closer look reveals they’ve been completely redefined for a new era. With influences ranging from supermodel-inspired voluminous blowouts to striking Y2K chunky highlights, these trends are poised to reclaim prominence, albeit with a contemporary twist. We connected with leading hair experts in the industry to uncover which retro looks are set to make a comeback (again) and how they’ve been refreshed to feel modern and wearable in 2025.
1. Ombré
If you visited a salon for color treatments around 2010, you’re likely familiar with ombré. Hair stylist and trend forecaster Tom Smith anticipates a notable revival of this style this year. “It’s really a response to the current economic situation,” says Smith. “Ombré provides a solution for those wanting to decrease salon visits while also serving as a creative and intriguing hair color design.” However, if you’re picturing harsh dip-dyed tips with a stark contrast between roots and ends, worry not—2025’s take on ombré is much more subtle. “The contrast is definitely reduced—only one or two shades difference between the darkest and lightest parts of the hair,” Smith explains.

2. Super Straight
While hair straighteners gained popularity as at-home tools in the ‘90s, the launch of GHD in 2001 truly revolutionized heat styling and led to the rise of poker-straight hair at the turn of the millennium. Smith predicts ongoing advancements in heat styling technology will lead to a resurgence in super-straight styles. “Achieving silky-straight hair of any texture is now easier than ever thanks to brands like Dyson and Cloud Nine, with innovations in styling products making regular straightening and repairing more feasible,” explains Smith. He recommends taking cues from Demi Moore’s iconic “long, fluid, unstructured hair” both then and now for inspiration.

3. Big Blowouts
On the other end of the volume spectrum, hair stylist and Hare & Bone salon owner Sam Burnett predicts a comeback of big, glamorous blowouts reminiscent of the supermodels of the ‘90s. “Inspired by icons like Cindy Crawford and Claudia Schiffer, this style embodies polished glamour with a modern twist,” says Burnett. “Social media has significantly contributed to its resurgence as people embrace the high-impact, healthy hair aesthetic, and tools like heated rollers and large-barrel blow-dry brushes make achieving it at home more accessible.”

4. Chunky Highlights
It’s normal to feel apprehensive when trends from our teenage years make a comeback, and I share the surprise that Y2K-inspired highlights are about to gain popularity. “These early 2000s highlights are reviving due to Gen-Z’s fascination with Y2K, but with a softer, more blended approach today,” explains Burnett. “The notable update is in the placement—instead of harsh blocks, highlights are now diffused and melted for a more sophisticated look.”
