Zaya! Chase! Laufey! Every Gorgeous Makeup Aspect of Our Current Issue
In case you missed it, our stunning April cover featured not just one, but three incredibly talented individuals from the realms of fashion, acting, and music. In our inaugural Now Playing Issue, Zaya Wade, Chase Sui Wonders, and Laufey showcased their distinct personalities in their respective shoots, and, as expected, their makeup styles were equally tailored. Wade sported a look with ethereal, celestial skin; Sui Wonders had a mix of whimsy and drama; and Laufey embraced a '90s grunge-inspired color scheme featuring rich chocolate tones and effortless neutrals. Each beauty look is a visual delight, and we’re about to explore every detail and product used.
Typically, the inspiration for a beauty shoot stems from an external source. However, makeup artist Tasha Reiko Brown shared that Zaya Wade herself was the muse for this shoot. "I wanted her youthful and playful essence to truly shine," she explained. "Zaya is very confident in her own skin, and I aimed to avoid heavy layers of makeup or an overly editorial look." Reiko Brown's approach was to highlight Wade's gorgeous skin. “Her complexion has a wonderful richness, and the texture is vibrant. I love enhancing her warmth while keeping the coverage ultra-light and purposeful.”
Skin preparation is vital, no matter the makeup application. To kick off the process, Reiko Brown used Chanel's La Solution 10 De Chanel ($87) to lightly hydrate Wade's face. For added warmth and slight coverage, she applied Chanel's Les Beiges Water-Fresh Complexion Touch ($70), followed by Chanel N°1 De Chanel Lip and Cheek Balm in Ardent Brick ($50) for a boost to Wade's natural flush. "This hue is very warm, and instead of a synthetic-looking blush, it harmonized beautifully with Zaya's warm undertones, giving her cheeks and lips a radiant sun-kissed glow."
For Wade's eyebrows, Reiko Brown expertly blended two pencil shades to achieve a natural, hair-like effect. "I alternated between Chanel's Stylo Sourcils Haute Précision Microfine Defining Eyebrow Pencil ($43) in Brun Noir and Brun Profond, finishing with a light application of Le Gel Sourcils Longwear Eyebrow Gel ($40) to secure everything."
To enhance and darken Wade's lashes, Reiko Brown used Chanel's Inimitable Extrême Volume Length Curl Separation Mascara in Noir Pur ($40), followed by a touch of Chanel's beloved Baume Essentiel Multi-Use Glow Stick ($48) in Transparent and Solar Glow on her eyelids, cheekbones, chin, and Cupid's bow, creating an overall luminosity to her face.
For Chase Sui Wonders, makeup artist Kara Yoshimoto Bua drew inspiration from the actress's charismatic personality, the Santa Monica Pier setting, and the stylish Chanel outfits. Bua incorporated vibrant colors with a hint of drama for a whimsical yet edgy look. "I aimed to balance a fresh spring vibe with a touch of edge," she shared. "I highlighted Chase's freckles, emphasized her rosy cheeks, and created a lightly defined lash line with a delicate flick." Bua finished with brown lip liner and a glossy, sparkly mauve lip color for the perfect boost.
To sculpt and subtly even out Sui Wonders' complexion, Bua blended Chanel's Les Beiges Water Fresh Tint ($70) with a bit of Vitalumière Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Sunscreen Makeup ($57), focusing on her T-zone. To accentuate her cheeks, she utilized Chanel's Joues Contraste Intense Cream-to-Powder Blush in Rose Ardent ($55), blending from the apples up to the temples. Bua applied Chanel's Le Volume de Chanel Mascara ($40) to lift and separate Sui Wonders' lashes, followed by the Stylo Sourcils Waterproof Defining Longwear Eyebrow Pencil in Brun Clair ($43) to define the brows and freckles. For the lips, she concluded with Chanel's Le Crayon Lèvres Longwear Lip Pencil in Nude Brun ($35) to define the edges and topped it off with Rouge Coco Gloss Moisturizing Glossimer in Bourgeoisie ($42) for added impact.
Makeup artist Kate Lee immediately noted Laufey's distinctive beauty. "Her skin is lovely, so I kept foundation minimal, favoring cream-to-powder formulas that enhance her soft, radiant beauty." Lee aimed for a gentle, fluid look reminiscent of '90s grunge, focusing on soft contours and natural makeup shades.
Focusing on Chanel's spring/summer 2025 makeup collection, Lee initiated the process by preparing Laufey's skin with Chanel's Nº1 De Chanel Revitalizing Essence Lotion ($125), followed by the Nº1 De Chanel Revitalizing Serum ($220) and Nº1 De Chanel Revitalizing Eye Serum ($100). To lock in hydration, she finished with the
