"I think, like many Hinge users, we didn't anticipate that our marriage story would come from a dating app, but that’s exactly where we connected," shares lawyer Latifa El Shafei, reflecting on how she met her husband, Armand van Hien. "Even after sharing the same café and working in neighboring offices for three years, we never encountered each other in person. Our initial date was casual after work drinks, and honestly, I thought it was 'nothing special.' In contrast, he left feeling like he had found his life partner. Though Armand seems like the quintessential nice guy—always opening doors and helping with coats in the cold—I didn’t envision that for myself. Having been accustomed to managing everything on my own and providing emotional support during dates, it took me three months and two unsuccessful breakup attempts for Armand to genuinely prove that he was not merely charming me but was indeed my commitment for the long term. As someone fiercely independent, I was acutely aware of the challenge of sharing my life with someone equally committed. Looking back, I’m grateful I embraced the good guy."
After a slow relationship start, things shifted, and just 14 months after our initial date, he proposed in the comfort of my living room. It was an easy 'yes' from me!
We planned two wedding events, both centered on intimacy. The first was a legal and religious ceremony with our families in January 2024, followed by a separate wedding party for friends. The legal ceremony took place at Chelsea Old Town Hall, the religious ceremony at a mosque in Notting Hill, and we hosted a family reception at Akub, also in Notting Hill. The wedding party with friends will be held at Sessions Arts Club in London in November 2024, followed by a wedding breakfast at Duck and Waffle, with a stunning view of the city.
"As a lawyer, I naturally lean towards tailored looks, but my inner fashionista dislikes blending in with everyone else. I chose a Ralph Lauren Maxi Tuxedo Dress paired with green Jimmy Choos and a green Bottega bag for the legal ceremony (green is my favorite!). It felt distinctly 'me,' and I see it as the dress I married in. I can never resell or redesign the Ralph Lauren Tuxedo dress; it’s timeless."
While planning two separate wedding events, many friends didn’t understand the reasoning. For me, it was about quality time with our closest family and friends. Ultimately, it’s about what feels right for you and your partner. I'm thrilled with how we commemorated our marriage. Consider how you wish to approach your wedding and do just that. There are countless ways to celebrate your love— there’s no wrong answer.
For both the wedding ceremony and party, I collaborated with various stationery designers and had significant input on my invitations. Natalie at Sixfold Studio was particularly fantastic during the wedding party preparations. She managed to translate my brainstorming into beautiful invitations. One of my favorite details was the afterparty invite in the form of a coaster from Duck and Waffle alongside the main invitation. Natalie even sketched images for each of the table names, which were London, Jakarta, and Cairo—each city carries special meaning for Armand and me, with me being half-Egyptian and him half-Indonesian.
The evening before the wedding party, my bridesmaids and I stayed at a hotel in London that had views of the city, which was significant to me since my bridesmaids come from varied friendship circles. It was wonderful to unite everyone for a bonding experience before the party.
The morning was relaxed; I felt confident I had everything under control, and it was out of my hands now. The planner and florist were present, and I enjoyed time with my friends as we got ready. The bridesmaids donned Free People pajamas, which I chose for their reusability. I wore a relaxed outfit from With Jéan, ensuring I felt comfortable and true to myself rather than sporting a typical bridal robe. My photographer Alex and makeup artist Natasha were the same from my January ceremony, adding to my comfort as we shared breakfast, prepped for makeup, and chatted away.
"Always do a makeup trial. It’s crucial to discuss your look with the MUA beforehand to gain their insights."
For the wedding party, I wore two Harriette Gordon dresses which I first tried on at The Fall Bride London store in January, coincidentally visiting with my mum. Though I hoped to schedule more fittings after January, once I was set on something, I struggled to consider any alternatives. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Annel
