I was concerned that this sandal trend might be "out," but this upscale-looking update just revived it.
To be frank, I’ve never really considered myself a sandals person. While my collection of ballet flats is approaching double digits, I possess only one solitary pair of sandals, which I don only when absolutely necessary. This could be attributed to the realities of urban commuting or my steadfast preference for closed-toe shoes, but sandals and I have always kept a respectful distance. However, this season, I can feel my resolve beginning to waver. Why? I've recently discovered the trend of suede fisherman sandals, and I'm genuinely thrilled. I had been concerned that my go-to fisherman sandals might not be as relevant as they once were, despite becoming a bit of a staple. Yet, the chic suede variation of the classic caged sandal has firmly established its appeal this summer.
Blending two of my favorite features in footwear—structure and coverage—with the soft, inviting texture of suede, I’m surprised suede fisherman sandals haven’t always existed. Rich, supple, and subtly luxurious, suede offers an elevated feel over leather that many comparable options simply do not achieve. Clearly, I’m not the only one with this newfound enthusiasm. From mainstream to luxury brands, the suede fisherman trend is being widely embraced. Zara’s deep-grey version could easily be mistaken for designer, yet retails for just £50. Meanwhile, The Row’s light brown pair—currently on sale—exemplifies understated luxury.
Scroll down to check out the styles I’m interested in this season. If, like me, you’ve never been fully convinced by sandals, these might just sway you.
