Berry Girl Summer is Here—Makeup Artists Suggest These Juicy Looks Flatter Every Skin Tone
It's nearly that time again. The warmer months are approaching, and I'm envisioning nothing but laid-back beach days and vacations off the Italian coast. Usually, I lean towards gold, bronze, and brick shades for my summer makeup looks, but this year, there's a trend gaining immense popularity online that I won't ignore. From deep, strawberry red lips to monochromatic raspberry looks, berry girl makeup is undoubtedly the style of the season. This trend is featured on my summer mood board for a few reasons. Firstly, there are countless ways to create a luscious, berry-inspired look—the options are truly limitless. Secondly, you don't need to be a makeup professional to master it. Nonetheless, I sought out advice from a few experts who provided pro tips on achieving a berry-inspired look flawlessly. For recommendations and looks suited to every skin tone, keep reading. They have shared everything below.
The Best Berry-Inspired Shades for Every Skin Tone
There are virtually no restrictions with this trend—everything is acceptable! While most berry shades suit all skin tones, makeup artists suggest specific tips to enhance your individual skin tone. "I'm really enjoying the berry girl trend—it's such a fresh, vibrant way to brighten the skin for summer," states celebrity makeup artist Chelsea Gehr. "I begin with a cream blush in a rich berry shade, blending it onto the high apples of the cheeks and along the bridge of the nose. I’ll then apply the excess product toward the temples for a soft, lifted effect—it creates a subtle lift and dimension, similar to contouring but without the heaviness of brown tones." Gehr, along with fellow celebrity makeup artists Robert Bryan and Kat James, shared a simple berry makeup guide for each skin tone below.
Fair skin tones: Consider pink-based shades with a hint of blue. Gehr suggests that soft raspberry is an excellent option, and pink-leaning hues work beautifully to replicate a natural flush without overwhelming your complexion.
Medium skin tones: Bryan prefers pink or red tones infused with blue or violet hues for skin tones that are slightly darker than fair.
Olive skin tones: Gehr advises that olive skin tones have green or neutral undertones, so deeper mauves or cool-toned berries can brighten the skin without clashing. James also favors mauves and rich raspberries for those with olive skin.
Brown skin tones: For those with deeper brown skin, James recommends embracing cranberry, pomegranate, and wine-stained tones. "They’ll offer contrast and dimension without being too bold or too subtle," she explains.
Deep skin tones: For deep skin tones, Bryan loves bright jewel-toned reds or pinks with purple or blue undertones. Gehr specifically suggests seeking out boysenberry, blackberry, or deep plum shades to accentuate the skin's warmth.
Pro Tips for Executing a Berry-Inspired Look
James mentions that there’s a trick to achieving a super juicy and glowy look for summer—it all begins with your base. "The secret to making berry makeup appear summery (and not fall or holiday-themed) lies in the skin," she clarifies. Start with a hydrated, light-reflective base—something that provides a glow without heaviness. Then, choose one or two areas to build your berry tones. In summer, less is definitely more. A personal favorite look of mine? A raspberry cream blush on the cheeks, a sheer berry stain on the lips, and fluffy, lifted lashes. That’s all. It’s refreshing, feminine, and suitable for brunch as well as a night out."
Once your base is set, Gehr states that perfecting a berry-inspired look is quite straightforward. "Focus on shades in the raspberry, mulberry, and mauve families—colors with cool or neutral undertones that mimic the skin's natural blush," she explains. "For depth and contrast, a brown lip liner pairs wonderfully with a sheer berry gloss or tinted balm, helping to define the lips while maintaining a soft and wearable appearance." Bryan adds that multi-purpose cream sticks or pots that can be applied on the eyes, lips, and cheeks contribute to uniformity. "This is particularly helpful in hot weather since cream products are easy to apply and yield a fresh, glowy finish."
