11 Lake Getaway Ideas That Are Even More Enjoyable Than the Beach

      Whenever I come across a social media video that jokes about dads pulling their kids on an inner tube with no hesitation, I immediately share it with my sister. Growing up, we spent our summers at the lake, where our dad (also known as the boat captain) would take us full speed over the large, white-capped waves, often launching us into the air. Even years later, the excitement of doing "doughnuts" with the boat and clinging to the tube for dear life stays with me. Now, my parents live on a lake, and my sister and I still enjoy tubing sessions just as much as we did when we were younger.

      Even if you don't have cherished memories of tubing as a child, spending time at the lake is incredibly enjoyable. You can opt for adrenaline-fueled activities like wakeboarding or water skiing, or take a more relaxed approach by enjoying a drink on the dock or napping on a boat. Lake vacations are an excellent choice for group trips, leisurely getaways, or family vacations. If you prefer admiring lake views rather than swimming, the Geneva Lake Shore Path—a 26-mile walking trail encircling the lake—will be perfect for you. Along the path, you can spot several Gilded Age mansions and historic estates while enjoying the pristine water views.

      For a fun on-water experience, consider the U.S. Mailboat Tour, where you can watch daring mail carriers leap on and off a moving boat to deliver mail to lakeside homes. For a swim, visit Riviera Beach, conveniently located right in downtown. When you're off the water, explore nearby ice cream shops, art galleries, and wine bars.

      Don’t have a boat? No worries! The Lake Sonoma Marina is a full-service boating hub offering ramps, slips, and rentals for pontoon boats, jet skis, kayaks, and paddleboards—suitable for all skill levels. After a day on the water, unwind with a glass or two at one of the local wineries.

      3. Lake Keowee, South Carolina

      While a swim in the lake is always refreshing, there’s something uniquely soothing about taking a dip in crystal-clear waters. Fed by the Blue Ridge Mountains, Lake Keowee is celebrated for its clean, sparkling emerald waters. The lake is dotted with numerous coves where you can anchor a boat rental before diving in or lounging on the deck. Some coves even feature small beaches that are ideal for sunbathing.

      The water is generally calm (especially in the mornings), making it great for paddleboarding and kayaking.
