An In-Depth Look: Gracie Lawrence's Tony Awards Outfit Steals the Show

The day before the 78th annual Tony Awards, Gracie Lawrence exited her final fitting with a message for her fans: "Wait until you see my look. Fit is fitting." By that time, we were seated, eagerly anticipating what the Best Featured Actress in a Musical nominee and her stylist, Jules Wettreich, had prepared for the red carpet. Lawrence did not disappoint, arriving in a custom polka-dot tulle gown designed by New York's Twiggy Moore. The fitted dress featured a fluted skirt and a black bow, embodying a delightful mix of whimsy and Old Hollywood glamour, making it ideal for the event.

You could say that the singer and actress has been experiencing a pivotal year in her career. It began with her joining the third and final season of The Sex Lives of College Girls as Kacey Baker, the group's new roommate and an adored theater enthusiast. In April, she made her Broadway musical debut portraying Connie Francis alongside Jonathan Groff in Just in Time, a role that has garnered her significant critical acclaim and the aforementioned Tony nomination. This fall, she and her brother, part of the band Lawrence, will embark on the U.S. leg of their Family Business Tour. Essentially, if Gracie Lawrence wasn't already on your radar, she definitely should be now.

We sent photographer Andy Henderson to document Lawrence as she prepared for Broadway's biggest night following a matinee performance of Just in Time. The show must always go on! Continue reading for Lawrence's exclusive photo diary.

"I did my own makeup for the Tonys, starting during our Sunday matinee to ensure we made it to the carpet on time. People don’t realize how fast the turnaround can be! So if you saw the Just in Time Sunday matinee, Connie Francis might have had some extra glamorous eyeliner..."

"Then my hairstylist, Netty Jordan, came into my dressing room and got to work!"

"The designer of my dress is Twiggy Moore! Naturally, the vibe of the night was polka dots."

"Details! I’ve been wearing several rings featuring clocks as a nod to Just in Time. Big thanks to my stylist Jules for that idea. We love a theme!"

"Putting on the dress! Twiggy completed this dress at lightning speed. From the initial concept to the final product, it took about two weeks. I sent her and my stylist Jules numerous references, all inspired by 1950s styles. Twiggy crafted something that echoed those silhouettes while also being uniquely her own. I aimed for a look that was fun yet elegant, capturing a balance between seriousness and playfulness—which can be a tricky feat! In that moment, it felt so rewarding and exhilarating to wear it along with the full hair and makeup, knowing we achieved our desired tone. I felt like myself the entire night!"

"Final touches. No matter how hard I try, I cannot escape the 'mascara face.'"

"Then my brother Clyde, who I collaborate with in our band Lawrence and who was my plus-one for the evening, arrived!"

"We all took some photos on the remarkable Just in Time set. It was such a joy getting ready at the theater. I’ll cherish that memory forever!"

"And then it was time to goooooo!"

Catch Gracie Lawrence in the Broadway musical Just In Time, currently playing at Circle in the Square Theatre.
