Luxury farmstays are the travel trend in Italy that everyone is reserving for the summer of 2025.

Picture this: A beautifully rustic hotel nestled in the hills of Southern Italy, away from the busy city life. During breakfast, your view is filled with rows of vineyard branches, while your room overlooks an infinity pool surrounded by olive trees. Your massage incorporates an oil made from herbs you passed through in the garden on your way to the spa, and your dinner features ingredients sourced directly from the well-maintained on-site farm. Does that sound like a fantasy? It exists throughout Central and Southern Italy. The type of property I’m referring to is a luxury farmstay resort, which is the latest travel trend enticing those of us with a longing for Italy.

The larger trend at play is agricultural tourism, or agriturismo. In Italy, this movement originated at the close of the 20th century when farm owners, faced with challenges, began transforming their land into resorts that would attract visitors in search of a serene getaway to appreciate the Italian countryside. Many of the existing luxury farmhouse hotels are based around a masseria, a fortified farm estate typically found in Southern Italy. These properties have been renovated and expanded to offer the modern amenities expected at a luxury resort, along with activities that engage with the surrounding nature, such as cooking classes, wine tastings, horseback riding, and truffle hunting.

What drives the trend of farm-based resorts? Keith Waldon, founder and director of Departure Lounge, a Virtuoso Agency, shared: "Departure Lounge has numerous clients eager for these agritourism luxury stays in Italy, and there are fantastic options throughout the country. It's been a solid part of our business for years, but these smaller country properties are especially popular now as a retreat from the crowded tourist areas of Italy. Spring and fall are generally the most enjoyable seasons, but even summer vacations in Northern Italy’s countryside can be delightful, and winter stays are appealing in Southern Italy for those properties open year-round."

In terms of location, these resorts are commonly found in Tuscany, Umbria, and Apulia, featuring many smaller boutique properties alongside larger resorts from luxury hotel brands like Rosewood and Belmond. While the locations may appear remote, Italy is not particularly large; thus, most are situated near one of the nation’s major airports. To summarize, Henley Vazquez, co-founder of Fora Travel, commended the agriturismo trend, stating, "While we’ll never tire of summer on the Italian coast, there’s something profoundly connected and authentic about these estates—places where travelers can escape crowds, reconnect with nature, combine wellness and wine, appealing to every sort of traveler. Kids can enjoy the pool or partake in a cooking class, honeymooners can experience some of the most exquisite spas I've seen, and enjoy long walks and romantic picnics around the estate."

(Image credit: Courtesy of Reschio Hotel) If you ask anyone who’s obsessed with travel in Italy which hotels are currently the trendiest, Reschio will undoubtedly be on their list. This property, located between Umbria and Tuscany, features a beautifully restored castle dating back to 1050. At the hotel’s core are two connected courtyards encompassed by the castle, where concerts and events frequently take place.

This charmingly luxurious resort has become a retreat for discerning celebrities, including Gwyneth Paltrow (who referred to it as "one of [her] favorite places on earth") and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. The estate includes two restaurants and a cooking school, along with a spa situated in a transformed wine cellar and a state-of-the-art equestrian center. There is certainly no shortage of activities available.

Highlights include: A sunken swimming pool with grass edges; a bathhouse spa; horseback riding at Taetro Equestre; Accademia di Cucina cooking school; and activities like truffle hunting and wine and olive oil tastings.

The Rosewood brand is synonymous with luxury and exceptional service, and one of its most stunning properties is Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco, perched in the hills of Tuscany within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Val d’Orcia. It occupies a 900-year-old estate that Rosewood has meticulously preserved. With only 42 suites and 11 villas, there's abundant privacy. (A fun fact: The estate was owned by the Ferragamo family back in the 1970s.)

Guests at Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco enjoy exclusive access to numerous attractions, including a cooking school where they can prepare traditional Tuscan dishes, an on-site winery, a golf course, and an organic kitchen garden inspired by medieval enclosed gardens. A variety of classes and experiences abound, including painting workshops, perfume-making sessions, excursions to Siena, and even vineyard tours by helicopter—the list goes on.

This summer, the resort is introducing a new Ferragamo Experience called Made in Tuscany.
