I Primarily Dress in Black—Here’s What Occurred When I Had My Colors Analyzed
A couple of years ago, my For You page became inundated with videos of individuals focused on their color analysis, trying to determine whether they were a "light summer" or "true winter." Many were draped in fabric swatches, examining palettes, and discussing which colors suited them best. Recently, I've observed a continuous trend of people visiting color studios in Korea, employing ChatGPT prompts for insights, and utilizing the newest color-analysis TikTok filter. In my own attempts to discover my colors, I often second-guessed myself, leading me to book an appointment at MyColor, an incredibly useful studio in Manhattan that specializes in Korean personal color analysis through the PCCS method—a more detailed system compared to the traditional four seasons. This approach categorizes individuals into 25 color types.
During my session, I underwent a draping test and received a digital PDF of my color palette, makeup suggestions, and an overview of my best, second-best, and least flattering colors. Here’s what I learned.
Warm Tones
I found out that I am definitely warm-toned, which didn’t surprise me much. This indicates that gold jewelry is more complementary to me, and I should favor warm colors in both my clothing and makeup. The two seasons that belong to the warm color palette are spring and autumn, while summer and winter correspond to cool tones.
What did take me aback was that my primary type is bright spring (also known as clear), followed closely by true autumn. Essentially, I appear best in warm, vibrant colors instead of muted tones or pastels. The hardest part of this realization is that my typical wardrobe consists largely of black, and my fashion has always leaned towards chic and minimalist. Being advised to incorporate more color felt like a significant departure from that. However, this was precisely why I sought a reading: to discover what truly looks good on me rather than sticking to my usual defaults.
Bright Spring
Ivory emerged as my best neutral (as opposed to pure white), and I excel in warm shades that are bold and "high in chroma”—including tomato red, salmon, coral, peach, hot pink, lime, kelly green, turquoise, aquamarine, orchid, and violet. Initially, I was unsure where to start shopping for these tones since they fall outside my comfort zone, but after filtering by color on platforms like Ssense, Nordstrom, Mango, and Net-a-Porter, I found a renewed sense of inspiration.
I’ve always enjoyed adding playful and artistic elements to my outfits, so perhaps this is simply a new way to embrace that. Brands such as Gimaguas, Brooke Callahan, Sandy Liang, Siedrés, Miaou, Rixo, Flore Flore, and Tank Air offer many options that resonate with the bright spring palette. When I consider individuals who truly embody this style, Devon Lee Carlson and Iris Law come to mind immediately.
