Here It Is: All the Hair and Makeup Tips from Our June Cover Featuring Molly Gordon
Hair full of bounce and effortlessly windswept, sun-kissed skin, and cheeks and lips blushing with berry hues… I would like what Molly Gordon has, please! In case you missed it, the adored actress is our cover star for June, and her beauty look, perfect for a yacht, has made its way to the top of my summer agenda. Feeling inspired, I asked the actress's glam team on set to share their detailed process, including every product that contributed to Gordon's radiant skin and hair. Keep reading, as I’m about to disclose all the exciting details.
Given the shoot's aquatic backdrop, it made perfect sense that Gordon's hair would be light, breezy (literally), and sunlit. According to celebrity hairstylist Barb Thompson, versatility was crucial. "Since Molly was embodying different characters throughout the day, I wanted the hair to move freely with each look. We alternated the part from the middle to the side but kept it straightforward. The aim was for healthy, beautiful hair."
To kick off the process and add a hint of soft volume at the crown, Thompson used Rōz's Root Lift Spray ($42) on Gordon's damp, towel-dried hair. For the lengths, she opted for the brand's Air Thickening Spray ($39) and for the ends (which, according to Thompson, need added shine and hydration), she applied Rōz's Milk Hair Serum ($52). After prepping the hair with the products, Thompson dried it using the Shark SpeedStyle Pro Hair Dryer ($190). "I really concentrated on over-directing the roots," she explains. "This not only helped with volume but also ensured it would stay in place all day—especially with the hours spent on the water."
Once Gordon's hair was fully dried, Thompson styled it using T3's SinglePass 1.5" Curling Iron ($150). Following that, she used R+Co's Outer Space Hairspray ($37) for hold and applied Velcro rollers to secure the style. (Thompson mentioned she also incorporated a few Skinny Clip-In Extensions ($65) from The Hair Shop behind Gordon's ears to add shape and volume.) To finish off the look, Thompson brushed everything into place using Leonor Greyl's Volumforme Styling Spray ($36).
To enhance and complement Gordon's flowing glamour, celebrity makeup artist Misha Shahzada drew inspiration from sun-soaked destinations like the French Riviera and Lake Como. "Molly's hair was soft and airy, so I aimed to keep her makeup bronzed and minimal," Shahzada shares. "Considering the shoot took place on a boat, I wanted the makeup to feel realistic—low-maintenance but still glowing and sun-kissed."
"Skin prep is the key to any flawless makeup application," Shahzada tells me as a starting point. "I generally begin with a skin-balancing toner like Omorovicza's Silver Skin Tonic ($90), as it's gentle on sensitive skin and helps to even out the complexion before adding other products." Next, she typically applies a hydrating hyaluronic acid serum such as Westman Atelier's Skin Activator Serum ($150), followed by a creamy moisturizer if the skin needs extra hydration. Her go-to? Augustinus Bader's The Cream ($190).
When it comes to makeup, Shahzada prefers a lightweight foundation for Molly, simply because her skin is "already flawless and needs very little coverage." (She loves Lisa Eldridge's Seamless Skin Foundation, $61.) To add some warmth, Shahzada then used Saie's Dew Bronze Soft-Focus Sculpting Liquid Bronzer ($26) across the actress's face for a subtle glow.
"I kept Molly's eyes quite simple, using the Victoria Beckham Beauty Eye Wear Longwear Eyeshadow Sticks ($34) to add depth and contour to the eye sockets," says Shahzada. She then applied Chanel's highly regarded Baume Essential in Transparent ($48) for a touch of highlight on the eyelids, and for Gordon's lashes, Shahzada added a few coats of Dior's Diorshow Overvolume Extreme Volume Mascara in Black ($33). To complete the look, she used Violette_FR's Bisou Balm in Bêtise ($29) for a natural flush, followed by Dior's Rouge Blush & Glow Palette in Dioriviera ($50).
