Black heels are perfectly acceptable, but in France, it's well-known that this shoe color pairs better with white dresses.
I will never speak negatively about black heels. My closet holds around 20 pairs of heels, and I would estimate that approximately 85% of them are black. However, just because they are excellent—timeless, versatile, and convenient—doesn't imply that you should only wear or purchase black heels. There are other, more vibrant colors worth exploring, and this summer in France, there seems to be a consensus that one alternative to black is particularly stylish with white dresses. That color is burgundy.
For evidence, just look at some of the most stylish outfits from the Jacquemus show at the Palace of Versailles during Paris Fashion Week. Notably, Laura Harrier and Alexandra Saint Mleux both paired their white dresses with burgundy heels, creating a delightful and unexpected way to wear the quintessential summer dress favored by every French woman. Unlike the stark contrast of black and white, which can appear harsh together, burgundy offers a softer and more natural look, making it a lovely match for bright white. It’s even better if your bag is also burgundy.
In terms of outfits, Laura Harrier wore a textured, high-neck, sleeveless maxi dress from Jacquemus, complemented by a burgundy leather top-handle bag and matching point-toe kitten heels adorned with a delicate bow on the toe. She finished off her look with '90s-inspired black sunglasses.
On the other hand, Mleux, who attended the Monaco Grand Prix with Jacquemus founder Simon Porte Jacquemus earlier this summer, sported a low-back, scoop-neck white gown paired with peekaboo burgundy heels. She accessorized with oversized gold earrings and a sculptural black clutch.
Clearly, the fashion scene in France is embracing burgundy heels, and it's time for everyone else to take notice. Below, find the best burgundy heels available this summer.
