As the Golden Globes approached this year, speculation arose about potential award winners and fashion choices. However, no one anticipated the moment that would completely dominate the event: Zendaya casually revealing her engagement to Tom Holland without uttering a word. The actress, nominated for her role as Tashi Donaldson in "Challengers," made a statement in a custom orange Louis Vuitton gown and showcased a prominent bezel-set east-west diamond on a delicate gold band designed by British jeweler Jessica McCormack.

Within minutes, social media erupted with excitement over the news. Soon, TikTok users began advocating for McCormack's rings in the hopes of getting their boyfriends to see them. The designer, already well-known in Europe, was rapidly gaining popularity among her American audience, especially after opening a new store on Madison Avenue in New York this past May.

The two-story shop, housed in a Beaux-Arts building dating back to 1879, features an array of items, including engagement rings that are sure to capture attention online once more, along with 20-carat oval-cut diamond pendant necklaces that reflect McCormack's signature style.       Below, we spoke with McCormack about the new store opening, the uniqueness of her pieces, and her philosophy on wearing jewelry.

Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in jewelry design?

Jessica McCormack: My background and my experiences at Sotheby’s have significantly shaped my design approach. My father, who was an auctioneer, introduced me to art and antiques early on, fostering my appreciation for beautiful things, whether they are vintage or contemporary. While at Sotheby’s, I had the privilege of working with some of the world's most renowned jewelry collections, including pieces from Cartier and Lalique from the 1920s and various crown jewels. This exposure not only fueled my creativity but also revealed the exceptional craftsmanship involved in jewelry design. I started designing in a small studio in Clerkenwell, collaborating with several artisans—some of whom are still with me after 17 years.

Q: You've mentioned that jewelry should be worn rather than kept in a safe. Can you elaborate on your philosophy regarding jewelry?

JM: My design process always takes wearability into account. I've cultivated a design philosophy that harmonizes elegance with practicality; versatility and comfort are crucial. For instance, our Gypset earrings can transition seamlessly from an office setting to a night out, ensuring you look appropriate in both situations. My aim is to create timeless jewelry that can be cherished, worn frequently, and eventually passed down through generations.

Q: What distinguishes your pieces from others?

JM: I believe that JM pieces can be styled for numerous occasions, whether for everyday use or more formal events—they can truly be adapted to fit the wearer's personal style. I love observing how individuals bring different interpretations to a piece, like the Ball n Chain necklace, which can take on various identities depending on who is wearing it. The versatility of my pieces is what makes each one unique.

Q: How would you characterize your typical customer, and how do they prefer to wear their jewelry?

JM: I design with the goal of complementing modern fashion rather than catering to a specific type of person. One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is seeing a diverse array of women donning my pieces and customizing them through their styling choices. The designs are thoughtfully created to integrate well with existing jewelry collections, allowing many of my clients to mix and match their new JM items with older pieces.

Q: What motivated you to establish a store in New York?

JM: We selected New York for our first international boutique due to the remarkable enthusiasm and support we've encountered from our clients in the US. It's thrilling to finally provide them with a local destination they can visit.

Q: What are you most looking forward to with this new store opening?

JM: I have always admired New York, and having a location on one of Manhattan's most iconic shopping streets presents a fantastic opportunity to connect with more people, while also welcoming familiar faces. I am particularly eager to build relationships with our American clients; spending time with them in person will be invaluable for both myself and the team.
