Keep it simple—this pairing of sandals and shorts is always stylish.

      Throughout the summer, I've experimented with various short and sandal styles on hot days, but one combination didn't initially cross my mind. That changed when Gwyneth Paltrow showcased a pairing that I can't believe I overlooked: Bermuda shorts with fisherman sandals. Until now, I've favored simple linen shorts and flip-flops, but Paltrow's choice of Bermuda shorts and fisherman sandals feels more stylish and contemporary, despite both items being available for a few seasons, which is quite impressive. I seldom see them worn together, but whenever I do, the result is always effortlessly cool. It's easy to understand why Paltrow chose to take these pieces on her recent trip to Italy.

      She completed her outfit with a basic black tank top and a matching belt, bringing the entire look together in a manner that feels deliberate yet relaxed, resulting in an elegant summer ensemble I know I can replicate at home or on my next vacation. Both Bermuda shorts and fisherman sandals have long been staples in capsule wardrobes. Fisherman sandals had a modern comeback in 2019 when The Row introduced a refined version that quickly became a beloved favorite. In fact, it’s The Row’s pair that Paltrow is seen wearing.

      Bermuda shorts have also seen a revival. Once a cult favorite in the ’90s, they simmered down until last summer when designers like Burberry, Givenchy, and Sacai demonstrated their return, seemingly to stay. What I appreciate most about this combination is its versatility—it’s a look that can transition from daily commutes to enjoying cocktails at sunset by the pool. Take a cue from Paltrow and London fashionistas by pairing it with a basic jersey top or elevate it with a silk blouse, halter top, or your favorite linen shirt; the latter is my plan for recreating this look myself.
