      If you're reading this, it's likely that you own a pair of flat Mary Janes. Given the trend's enduring popularity, many of us have embraced this style. Although they certainly create adorable looks, flat Mary Janes don't inherently lend themselves to sophistication. I firmly believe that shoes can dramatically alter an outfit, and the pair that Anne Hathaway chose while spotted in Manhattan elevated her look far beyond what flat Mary Janes would have achieved.

      If you've surmised that I'm referring to high-heel Mary Jane pumps, you're absolutely right. Hathaway selected a platform pair in black patent leather, which she styled with a white T-shirt, a pleated gray miniskirt, and a plaid shirt. Had she opted for the flat version of this timeless trend, her outfit would have still been nice, but it wouldn't have been nearly as chic or suitable for a night out in NYC.
