This celebrity stylist is recognized for turning hair trends into viral sensations (ahem, Prada Bob), so I reached out to him for some inspiration.
Almond milk. Cacao nibs. Churro waves. This isn't a grocery list, but rather a glimpse into Dimitris Giannetos's celebrity hair transformations that have caused a stir on social media, with each style artfully crafted and enhanced by a distinctive name. "I need to publish a book with all my names," the celebrated hairstylist and colorist shared with Who What Wear, laughing. Just his bob names could fill several chapters; the Prada bob, Valentine bob, flip-flop bob, cowgirl bob, and Jackie-O bob are all worthy of being celebrated in print. For now, you can find them showcased on his Instagram, scattered throughout hair trend compilations, and likely lingering in your memory. "My mom always wanted to know the name," he reminisces from his beauty school days. "I would style her hair into a layered bob, and she would ask, 'What’s the name of this haircut?'" The question—“What shall we name this one?”—has lingered in his mind throughout his journey, from styling Demi Moore at the Oscars to Khloé Kardashian in Venice and Gigi Hadid at the Met Gala. (The answers? Studio 54 hair, the glazed bun, and boudoir curls, respectively.)
We recently spoke with Giannetos to delve deeper into his creative process, how he chooses each name, his main sources of inspiration, and his all-time favorite celebrity hairstyle (which may surprise you!). Get to know the mastermind behind nearly every trending hairstyle.
On Starting in the Industry "I have been a hairstylist for 26 years. I began my career in Greece; at 16, I enrolled in beauty school, where I spent 12 years working with major magazines like Vogue, Bazaar, Elle, and serving as an ambassador for L'Oréal Paris. Being a Sagittarius, I’m always dreaming big—setting goals and chasing my dreams! So at 29, after reaching the pinnacle of my career in Greece, I thought, 'What’s next? I’m moving to America.'"
Making the move was a challenging decision since I didn't know anyone and didn't speak the language. I was naive; that’s what propelled me forward. The first person I encountered was Maria Menounos, a Greek American. I met her while still in Greece, and after moving to New York she said, 'If you come to L.A., I’d love to work with you.' I did, and that's how I started working with her before finding my first agent, Charly Shahin, the founder of Opus Beauty. I owe the start of my career to him; he introduced me to key people and helped me make my name known."
"I felt confident in my abilities, though the language barrier made things tough at first. The role involves connecting with clients and making them feel confident and secure, which was a significant challenge for me. I firmly believe that hard work pays off, and I’ve put in the effort—still do. All those connections made through Charlie opened so many doors. My early clients included Camila Cabello, then with Fifth Harmony; Joey King; and Britney Spears."
"I eventually joined Guido Palau’s team. He’s a visionary and perhaps the best hairstylist of our time in the fashion realm. Working under him for several years allowed me to attend all the major fashion weeks in Milan, Paris, and New York… it was an incredible opportunity. My goal was to excel in my craft while bringing something fresh to my celebrity clients, something inspired by editorial and fashion."
"Working with celebrity hair can sometimes feel limiting—like, 'Oh, this season's trend is ponytails, neat buns, and straight hair.' My aim was to think outside the box. In Greece, we don’t strictly follow the rules. You attend beauty school and get the basics, but I always prefer a creative approach with every client. Participating in all those fashion shows allowed me to explore that further."
On Realizing His Passion for Hair "As a young boy, I enjoyed playing with my mom’s and sister’s hair. They would sit at the table, and I would play with their hair. It felt natural to me. However, growing up in a small town in Greece—Thessaloniki—almost three decades ago, it was somewhat taboo for a boy in a small community to aspire to hairstyling. Expressing this desire to my dad was difficult. I started going to therapy at a young age, and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. My therapist encouraged me to pursue my passion, saying, 'What will you choose for your life? Don't worry about the community’s perspective.' It was life-changing."
"I had to trick my dad at first—I’m not going to lie. I told him, 'I think I might want to pursue barbering,' as that sounded less daunting. [Laughs
