Doechii's nail artist recently revealed that these 10 products are the key to achieving any stunning nail aesthetic.
My preferred pastime is connecting with individuals who share my passion for nail art. Fortunately, I discovered Rachel Sun, the artist behind all of Doechii's unforgettable nail designs. A quick peek at Sun's Instagram will illustrate my point. From this year's Met Gala nails for Doechii to her latest Cowboy Carter set, it’s clear that I'm currently obsessed with Sun and her artistry. Additionally, she often shares tips for recreating some of these styles at home. Here's a hint: she likes to use tools available on Amazon for under $10. I was eager to learn about Sun’s techniques and the essentials she relies on to create her signature designs. She graciously provided me with details about the products she considers her secret weapons. For information on her favorite creations for Doechii and the products she frequently uses, keep reading.

**Doechii's Spinning Button Nails**
This nail design was inspired by a custom button set from Handsomegirly clothing that Doechii wore. Sun prepared the nails using two layers of gray polish, then added spinning nail charms from Amazon and positioned the buttons on top to provide an interactive 3D effect. “I handpicked the buttons from a charming small business in Los Angeles called Azi in Wonderland, run by the kindest man,” Sun shared. “He had an exquisite collection of vintage buttons, making each one unique and beautiful!”
**Doechii's Gilded Gold Nails**
Sun also crafted a dazzling set of gilded gold nails for Doechii during Paris Fashion Week that quickly became popular. She began by creating custom over-the-finger nail tips and painting them black. Then, she used Function of Vex's Black Void One Step Gel to create textures on each nail. After that, she applied Function of Vex's Solo Pressed Chrome Powder in Gold Tooth to give the nails their luxurious color.
**Doechii's Alligator Claws**
This alligator claw design was primarily sculpted using polygel. Sun employed polygel for the eyelid and socket of the alligator eye, utilizing 3D molding gel for the eyeball. “[I used] a thicker viscosity gel for the texture of the alligator skin. (This design was initially created by @nailedbytav on Instagram),” Sun explained. “I used Fineprint 3D Art Gel in Bone from Function of Vex for this design, as it could hold the etched design long enough to complete the look across the entire nail.”
**Sun's Favorite Products and Colors**
According to Sun, a quality topcoat is essential for any impressive nail look. For matte finishes, she loves the one from Function of Vex. “This is my secret for every chrome isolation design on nails,” she noted. “Not a single speck of chrome will stick to the background of the design, keeping the chrome finish sharp and clean.”
Sun prefers to use polygel for much of her work—it’s her favorite medium for artificial extensions and 3D designs. If you’re interested in trying polygel, she recommends brands like Gaoy (available on Amazon) or polygel from Nail Craft Cult. “This medium is soft enough to easily sculpt designs without spending too long smoothing everything out, while still maintaining its shape for the desired form. I always use polygel and forms to craft cat claws,” Sun said.
Sun mentioned that nail art powders are vital for any creative design. “I utilize nail art powders, which are pigments for creating ombré effects, adding shading, and easily blending colors seamlessly without needing to airbrush or laboriously mix gel polish together. My favorite palettes come from Function of Vex.” Unfortunately, all of Function of Vex’s cool nail art powder palettes are currently sold out, but keep an eye out for restocks if you enjoy DIY nail art.
As for color selection, Sun states that neutral tones, like OPI's Put It in Neutral, are fundamental when crafting a fantastic set of nails. She refers to it as the perfect jelly nude shade that lays a great foundation for any design. When she opts not to use this shade, she likes to mix her own natural-looking colors to achieve the ideal hue.
In addition to Put It in Neutral, another favorite of hers is OPI's Bare My Soul. “These two shades provide the perfect jelly nude base for most of my designs where I don’t want the natural nail to be fully obscured while still offering a blank canvas for additional designs,” she explained.
For more striking colors, Sun loves vibrant shades like cobalt for summer. “This color is so refreshing, electrifying, and energizing,” she expressed. “My preferred cobalt blue tone is OPI's IndiGo Off, which is a clearer jelly shade.”
Her other frequently used blue shade is 125 Babe Blue from V Beauty Pure. “[This] is also a
