From toe rings to "barefoot" shoes and clear jelly sandals, it’s evident that the fashion world is focusing on feet this summer. Apologies if that sounds a bit odd—but why should it? I understand that people (generally) aren’t fond of discussing feet, which is exactly why adorning them has sparked such diverse opinions. For those who support a bit of foot adornment, how about enhancing the look with some pedicure nail art? Like toe rings, this trend is rooted in nostalgia; perhaps you remember a nail technician painting a single daisy on your big toe during your first pedicure. Because of this, toenail art has often felt a bit less "grown-up," despite the array of luxurious and elegant designs available for your toes. Furthermore, as previously mentioned, feet have not received much attention until recently. "People (especially in the U.S.) generally dislike feet—whether their own or others', even if they are well taken care of," celebrity nail artist Julie Kandalec notes. "People want to spend minimal time on them... That’s why we stick to solid colors and not much else." However, times are shifting, trends are surfacing again, and I'm fully on board with toenail art. Check out how other fashionable individuals have embraced the pedicure trend below, and you might just be inspired to give it a try.

Why Is Pedicure Nail Art So Popular Right Now? For starters, open-toe season is in full swing. Summer often encourages more playful nail trends, so why not pair your bold manicure (perhaps a picnic-inspired design) with an equally striking pedicure? "I think people are taking their nails less seriously these days and are just having more fun, including with their pedicures," says celebrity nail artist Natalie Minerva. "It really adds a fun detail, especially when wearing open-toed shoes. The options for some stylish toes are endless, whether you choose a bright color, a chrome finish, or even a fruit design." Pair your nail design with a chunky toe ring stack, and you'll enhance even the simplest black sandals. Practically speaking, it’s also much easier to play around with pedicure nail art. The big toe provides a larger canvas! "It gives us plenty of room to experiment, along with eight little 'backup dancers' that can either complement an accent design or allow the big toe to shine on its own," Kandalec explains. Minerva prefers to let the big toe take center stage, noting that it’s "a fantastic way to add something special without requiring a lot of time."

Both professionals have noted a rise in general interest in pedicure nail art, although the trend is still somewhat under the radar. "It’s not widespread yet—but it’s growing," Kandalec mentions, pointing out that pedicure nail art has been quite popular in Asia. "I’ve seen a lot of [pedicure] nail art in Japan and South Korea during my travels," she adds. Both regions are generally ahead in terms of beauty trends, so we can anticipate an even greater increase in popularity in the coming weeks. All the more reason to join the trend before it gains even more momentum.

(Image credit: @thehangedit) I’m obsessed with this earthy pedicure, from the mismatched polish colors to the big toe accents. Minimalists among us can embrace the trend with a glossy ombré effect. (Image credit: @thehangedit) See? Toe rings and toenail art just make perfect sense. I love the retro vibe here.

The Best Designs to Try The possibilities are endless! If you’re feeling nostalgic, consider opting for tiny designs like flowers, hearts, or smiley faces—anything reminiscent of your middle school doodles. You could even add a mini nail sticker or two if you wish. "I adore a bejeweled big toe," Minerva shares. If that sounds a bit youthful, Kandalec suggests avoiding illustrations altogether and opting for "more organic designs, such as color-blocking, natural stones like rose quartz, stained glass, classic stripes, and deeper or sheer colors instead of bright pastels." Nonetheless, vibrant polishes certainly have their time and place. "A brightly colored French would be so cute for a beach vacation," Minerva notes. "I also love the idea of a jelly gradient on toes." This design practically begs to be paired with your favorite jelly sandals. Both professionals also love a chrome finish on toes, which you can easily coordinate with your fingernails. "Chrome on toes is absolutely stunning," Kandalec enthuses. "I wore orange chrome on mine last year and received so many compliments! A metallic or shiny
