Put Down the Baguette—This Fendi Bag is Equally Iconic and Set for a Major Comeback.
As an editor with a passion for handbags, I have an extensive knowledge of It bags. From timeless classics like the Chanel Flap Bag to newer favorites like The Row's Margaux, this is a subject I've thoroughly explored. I appreciate not only the aesthetic appeal of a bag but also its intricate details, thoughtful design elements, and the cultural significance they embody. Today, I'm highlighting a bag that made a significant impact in the fashion industry and is making a comeback for autumn/winter 2025. Let's rewind for a moment. It’s spring/summer 2005, and Fendi's runway show is about to commence. The lights illuminate as the show kicks off. A vibrant array of summer styles is paraded, each model showcasing the latest from Fendi's exquisite bag collection—the Fendi Spy Bag was introduced.
The response was instantaneous. A surge of waiting lists emerged, as every celebrity and fashion-forward individual sought to add this latest icon to their wardrobe. Once available, the bag was frequently seen on the arms of notable figures like Ashley Olsen and Sarah Jessica Parker. Now, two decades later, its allure has not diminished, with eager bag enthusiasts searching resale markets for another opportunity to own one. Bella Hadid was even spotted with a vintage version in 2022. With its 20-year legacy, Fendi has reintroduced the Spy Bag for 2025. Since it has already been seen on various celebrities and fashion insiders, I wanted to evaluate this newly reimagined It bag.
A Comprehensive Review of the New Fendi Spy Bag
Achieving icon status for an accessory is impressive, but attaining that recognition for a reissued style is even more remarkable. In my view, Fendi has an advantage with the bag’s distinctive shape. The dumpling style, paired with the sleek double handle and soft structure, captured the bohemian spirit of its time, a vibe we are witnessing again in 2025. The resurgence of blouses, ruffles, and airy boho dresses indicates that a similar aesthetic is creating a stir, perfectly coinciding with this bag’s return.
The appearance and feel of the bag remain faithful to the original design, especially the combination of exquisite craftsmanship and the joyful creativity of Silvia Venturini. The closure flap features a concealed compartment for valuable items, reflecting the bag’s name’s mysterious connotations. I utilized mine to keep a lip gloss handy.
The most significant alteration to the bag is its appearance. Initially unveiled in early 2000s muted tones, metallics, and two-tone designs, the subsequent fall collection introduced velvet textures, bead embellishments, and bold patterns. Over the past twenty years, the fashion landscape has shifted considerably, embracing a new mood. While daring designs will always be celebrated, the recent trend towards minimalism has retained its appeal, with a less-is-more philosophy now representing the pinnacle of luxury.
Devoid of logos and elaborate designs, the new Fendi Spy Bag adopts a more understated aesthetic, focusing on smooth, polished leather, a striking shape, and a carefully curated color palette. It is currently offered in classic neutrals, subtle pastel hues, and a shearling version. Observant fashion watchers may have also noticed new variations on the autumn/winter 2025 runways, including an exquisitely elegant deep green and shiny black. The previously woven handles have received an update with a fresh twist design, enhancing the timeless charm of the bag, ensuring that two decades from now, the Fendi Spy Bag will still be a topic of discussion.
Is the Fendi Spy Bag Worth It?
As an enthusiastic handbag collector, it’s essential for me to discuss not just the bag's beauty but also its functionality in daily life. Some bags are saved for special moments due to their impractical size or cumbersome design; however, the Fendi Spy Bag is not one of those.
The bag is available in two sizes: small and regular. I was able to try the smaller version, which accompanied me through a day of work, including a lunch meeting and a trip across town to see a new collection. The small size is ideally suited for daily use, surprisingly accommodating a wallet, sunglasses, Kindle, and water bottle. Naturally, I made use of the hidden coin pocket in the flap for some small valuables.
My initial impression of this bag was how comfortable it is to carry. The smaller design is not really meant to be worn over the shoulder, so I found myself holding it in hand, tucking it in the crook of my arm, and using the adjustable crossbody strap. The smooth leather and padded twist handles, alongside the soft shape, allow the bag to adapt to how it is carried. The thin leather strap is unobtrusive in appearance and adjustable for the perfect crossbody fit. The soft silhouette allows for a comfortable wear.
A subtle gold-embossed Fendi logo graces the flap, but this is not the only indicator of a luxurious piece.
