Proenza Schouler has just revealed its new creative director—here's what you need to know about Rachel Scott.

The unofficial onset of fall has arrived, heralding a feeling of renewal and transformation. As we step into the season, it also marks the beginning of a new era for Proenza Schouler. Today, the New York-based label announced the appointment of Rachel Scott, founder of Diotima, as its new creative director. Scott takes over from Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough, who co-founded Proenza Schouler in 2002 but left in April to become the creative directors of Loewe. In a press release, Hernandez and McCollough expressed their admiration for Scott: "Rachel is someone whose work we have always respected," they noted. "Her journey over the past few years has been remarkable to observe. As founders and board members of the company, we are honored to welcome her to this beloved brand and look forward to seeing how she will embrace and advance the legacy and ethos of what we initiated." The fashion community is also keen to witness her next steps at the American House, particularly due to her artisanal background and previous consulting experience at Proenza Schouler. "As one of today's most celebrated design talents, Rachel brings a fresh and feminine viewpoint to a brand that embodies the modern American woman’s spirit," stated Shira Suveyke Snyder, CEO of Proenza Schouler, in a press release. "Her deep understanding of Proenza Schouler's brand principles, coupled with her outstanding ability to combine craftsmanship with innovation, made her the ideal candidate to lead the brand forward." Scott’s first collection as creative director will be showcased in February 2026 during the F/W 26 presentation. Read on to discover more about Scott.

      1. She Founded and Leads Diotima

In 2021, Scott launched her own brand, Diotima, where she serves as the creative director. Over the past four years, the label has gained acclaim for its distinctive artisanship and culturally inspired designs. The collections feature materials such as crochet, mesh, and linen, reflecting Scott's Jamaican heritage, all while incorporating tailored silhouettes to create contemporary pieces. While transitioning to Proenza Schouler, she will continue in her role at Diotima.

      2. Her Experience Includes Roles at Renowned Fashion Brands

Scott's expertise goes beyond Diotima. She began her career at J. Mendel and then transitioned to Elizabeth and James, the label established by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, where she worked as a designer. From 2021 to 2022, she was the vice president of design at Rachel Comey, overseeing footwear and ready-to-wear, before leaving to launch her own brand.

      3. She Has Earned Multiple Prestigious Awards

Since the inception of Diotima in 2021, Scott has garnered four significant awards. Her first accolade was the CFDA Emerging Designer of the Year award in 2023, followed by the CFDA American Womenswear Designer of the Year award in 2024, and the CFDA x Frazier Family Foundation Empowered Vision Award in 2025. In April, she was honored with the Fashion Trust U.S. Ready-to-Wear Award. Her industry recognition not only confirms her suitability for Proenza Schouler but also positions her as a pivotal leader in shaping the future of American fashion.

      4. She Is the Only Woman of Color Currently Leading a Major Fashion House

Recently, the fashion industry has witnessed significant changes in creative directorships. For instance, Pierpaolo Piccioli took over as creative director at Balenciaga following Demna's departure to lead Gucci, while Jonathan Anderson was appointed the creative director of Dior after leaving Loewe. Notably, Scott's role at Proenza Schouler stands out as she becomes the only woman of color to head a fashion house this season, marking a significant milestone in the industry.
