As summer comes to an end, it's time to store away those summer dresses and short shorts, making space for coats and sheer tights with the arrival of fall. The Who What Wear team is analyzing the major trends we'll be seeing this season. Kristen Nichols, the associate director of special projects at Who What Wear, highlights a revival of faux and upcycled fur. "It's a bit unexpected since furry and faux fur styles haven't graced the runways for a while," Nichols remarked. "It was quite surprising but left a lasting impression."
Audry Hiaoui, the associate shopping editor at Who What Wear, forecasts a comeback of preppy fashion as well. "Preppy style is somewhat aligned with my personal taste, so I'm thrilled to see the return of polo dresses and shirts," Hiaoui expressed.
In the latest episode of The Who What Wear Podcast, our editors discuss their top picks for fall runway trends, what they plan to add to their wardrobes in the upcoming months, and more. For a glimpse into their discussion, scroll below.
Can you provide an overview of the trends we observed on the fall-winter runways this past spring?
Kristen Nichols: There were numerous exciting trends. One of the most talked-about was the comeback of faux fur and upcycled fur. We saw plush outerwear at Altuzarra right at the start of New York Fashion Week. Then, during Milan Fashion Week, Prada showcased stunning coats with beautiful faux-fur collars. Miuccia Prada continued this trend at Miu Miu with remarkable stoles.
Furry elements appeared in various forms, whether as full coats or accessories, and I think this will be a significant trend for fall. It's surprising since we haven't seen this furry aesthetic in some time. Another major trend was an emphasis on feminine fashion codes, particularly evident in Miuccia Prada's question in her show notes, "What does femininity mean today?" Many designers sought to reinterpret how women dress in contemporary times, blending it with elements from the past. We observed a nostalgic take on femininity presented in modern styles, featuring slip dresses, bullet bras, car coats, voluminous bows, and satin fabric. The brands that best embodied this were Prada, Schiaparelli, Fendi, Miu Miu, and Givenchy, among others. I believe this will have a significant influence on how people choose to dress this fall.
I want to revisit the trend you mentioned regarding femininity. Are we beginning to see this trend emerge in the market as early as September? What are your observations?
KN: This trend has actually been emerging since last year. We've seen a rise in satin and lace slip skirts, which have become quite popular. Personally, I've really enjoyed this trend, and it's evolving into different styles. For instance, the Dôen shorts were incredibly sought-after and sold out almost immediately, even after restocks.
Looking ahead to fall, I anticipate more slip dresses will appear. The Phoebe Philo dress seems to be the one every fashion enthusiast desires, but there are many other variations. I expect this trend will continue to flourish this season.
Many aspects of femininity will gain traction, although I haven't seen them fully evolve in fashion yet. Early signs are emerging, such as the satin bullet bra, which may not rank as the most practical item yet has appeared in editorial shoots. I think it has potential, whether worn as a bold street style piece or layered under another garment. We'll likely see more of it this season.
Do you have any favorites from what Kristen just talked about, or in general?
Audry Hiaoui: I think faux-fur stands out as a notable trend. I was surprised by how much I appreciate it. Typically, I tend to wear classic black wool coats that are essential for fall, but I'm eager to opt for something more playful this season. I'm definitely planning to add a faux-fur coat to my rotation.
Preppy fashion was also prominent on the runways. I feel that it aligns with my personal style, so I'm delighted to see the resurgence of polo dresses and shirts.
We also witnessed many darker looks, characterized by black lace, sheer chiffon, leather, and Victorian ruffles. If someone is not typically inclined towards this style but wants to explore a moody aesthetic, where should they shop?
AH: One of the standout elements in this style is the sheer pieces. A simple way to embrace this trend is by getting a sheer black skirt. For fall, you can pair it with sheer black tights and a turtleneck. Additionally, vintage leather items can be versatile. I love sourcing jackets on eBay, searching for terms like "Wilson's Leather," "Colebrook
