For the hair and makeup team behind Netflix's Wednesday, creating the ethereal appearance of the characters is a skill. Nirvana Jalalvand offers a pro tip for achieving the ideal dark under-eye circles: she doesn't apply any product beneath Jenna Ortega's eyes. "I literally just don't put any product under her eye, and then I bring the base color up to where her under-eye is, creating that illusion of shadow," Jalalvand explained. "Eliminating the warmth and skin tone allows the bluish tones under her eyes to stand out."

In the most recent episode of The Who What Wear Podcast, beauty editor Kaitlyn McLintock converses with Jalalvand and fellow Wednesday hair-and-makeup experts—Francesco Pegoretti and Lynn Johnston—about their favorite products used on set, their inspiration from the original black-and-white The Addams Family, and additional insights.

Were there any standout essential products that you particularly liked using this season?

Nirvana Jalalvand: The Pat McGrath foundation was remarkable. Additionally, the Pat McGrath under-eye powder was something I used all over [Jenna Ortega's] skin, providing a lovely "airbrushed finish" that worked beautifully.

Lynn Johnston: We utilized a lot of MAC products along with some from Charlotte Tilbury, Sculpted by Aimee, Glossier, and of course, Armani Luminous Silk. On the special effects side, we incorporated some of the Bluebird palettes for skin and illustrator palettes. The Embryolisse moisturizer is excellent for breaking up any makeup that feels a bit cakey throughout the day, helping to refresh it before reapplying.

Francesco Pegoretti: I’m a fan of Maria Nila and Oribe. For events, particularly structured looks, I really like using the Blix brand for hairspray.

Of course, the Addams Family is recognized for their pale skin, which has a ghostly quality. How do you achieve this look, and what complexion products are utilized?

NJ: That Pat McGrath foundation I mentioned works very well because it layers beautifully. Jenna has stunning Latino skin, but we aim for that gothic, ghostly appearance. I've always matched her shade to the lightest part of her complexion, creating an overall aura of slight fairness.

I’m quite impressed with the realistic dark circles on the characters. How do you create such authentic-looking dark circles?

NJ: For Jenna, since her look is more subtle, I literally do not apply any product under her eye, bringing the base color just up to where her under-eye is to create that shadow illusion. By removing warmth and skin tone, the bluish tones beneath her eyes really stand out. Jenna enjoys it when they are pronounced; sometimes if she feels well-rested, she remarks, "I look too well rested today."

LJ: For some of the male characters, we used tones from the MAC Pro Palette that are very lacking in warmth or occasionally the Ben Nye matte foundation, depending on the individual's skin tone. If a product was thick or heavy, we tended to mix it with the MAC Pro makeup mixer to thin it out. Often, we would blend more than one color to avoid a blocky appearance, making it look more realistic.
