KinoReporter will present "Black-and-White Cinema": a photo exhibition opens to mark the collector's issue.
From September 23 to October 5, 2025, the In Artibus Foundation gallery will host a photo exhibition dedicated to the release of the premium edition of the magazine KinoReporter — the almanac Black-and-White Cinema. The title of the second special issue speaks for itself and defines its content, combining exquisite photo shoots created in a black-and-white style, excerpts from interviews with leading Russian actors and journalistic investigations — a selection of the best materials published in the magazine over the years of its existence.
The exhibition’s particular value is given by works executed both in the classic monochrome technique and in the authors’ color interpretations, where deep blacks and whites dominate, creating the unique atmosphere of classic cinema. Each image is a separate story told in the language of photographic art, where the black-and-white palette becomes the main artistic tool, and touches of color add special expressiveness and depth to the works.
The almanac Black-and-White Cinema will go on sale on September 22, 2025. At the presentation and opening of the photo exhibition it will be presented by the founder and editor-in-chief of KinoReporter, the well-known television presenter, journalist and film critic Maria Lemesheva. She herself is the author of exclusive interviews with many stars of Russian and world cinema. In 2018 she was the first among editors-in-chief to decide to refuse the American license under which KinoReporter’s predecessor The Hollywood Reporter was published and to launch her own entirely domestic film media.
“The release of the collectible almanac Black-and-White Cinema is not simply a continuation of the success of the previous issue, but a fresh reading of the aesthetics of Russian cinema. Monochrome allows us to show the genuine beauty of the modern stars of the national screen, gives them the magic and style of the golden age of cinematography and emphasizes that they are worthy successors. The minimalism of black-and-white frames makes it possible to see all the shades of emotion and the depth of a gaze, which are often more vivid than any colors. We carefully selected the materials included in this premium edition and worked lovingly on each of its components. Our collection of almanacs has been enriched by another unique copy. And thanks to the photo exhibition we organized, viewers have a unique chance to see these photographs in large format and examine them in all their detail,” said Maria Lemesheva.
The aesthetic execution is organically combined with the depth of content. These are precisely the principles KinoReporter has always adhered to — the first glossy film magazine in Russia. From its first issue in 2018 it pursued the most ambitious goals: to popularize Russian culture, cinema and theater and to actively introduce readers to the domestic film industry. The publication quickly gained recognition thanks to its unique content: thoughtful analytical materials, reports from film sets and exclusive interviews with well-known actors and directors. Over the course of its work the magazine has become an authoritative voice of the Russian film industry.
Among the figures featured in the almanac are Nikita Mikhalkov, Sergey Bezrukov, Alexander Petrov, Stasya Miloslavskaya, Mark Eidelshtein and other stars of domestic cinematography. The publication is produced as a true work of art. In quality, the second issue is on par with the first, which caused a major response in the cultural community a year ago and became a collectible item. However, the second almanac has its own unique style and character. Black-and-White Cinema is a new look at Russian cinematography through the prism of contrasts.
On October 6, fans of Russian cinema can also expect a surprise from KinoReporter and the flagship store Respublika. Follow the news on the magazine’s official website and social media.
KinoReporter is published with state support and with the assistance of Nikita Sergeyevich Mikhalkov, participates in the world’s major film events and holds its own events, including the Avans and Event of the Year awards. The first is presented to the best young artists, opening the way for them to reach the heights of popularity. The second is the most famous, anticipated and authoritative industry event, recognizing prominent names and events, as well as anniversaries of great masters, landmark films and programs, and important historical dates.
