Leighton Meester has recently taken on a new role and shared all the exciting beauty details.
The announcement is here: Leighton Meester is taking on a new role that mirrors her impressive acting talent. On Monday, it was revealed that before starring in season two of Netflix's popular series Nobody Wants This—featuring Adam Brody and Kristen Bell and set to premiere on October 23—she will become the first actress to depict the iconic Lady Godiva in collaboration with Godiva Chocolatier. Although the historical Lady Godiva is primarily remembered as an Anglo-Saxon noblewoman celebrated for her church patronage and a famous naked ride on horseback, Meester's interpretation promises to bring a fresh, modern vibe with a touch of mid-century makeup style. I had the chance to chat with a newly blonde Meester just prior to the public announcement and discovered firsthand what we can expect as the Brussels-born chocolatier embarks on this new journey with her as its new face. Continue reading for an insider's perspective on the intriguing realm of Lady Godiva.
I'd be interested to learn more about what this exciting collaboration with Godiva means to you! What was the main vision behind aligning with the brand? There are many reasons to team up with Godiva, but this campaign has been both enjoyable and significant for me! Primarily, I just genuinely love chocolate, so it doesn't take much to persuade me to indulge. I've been a lifelong fan of Godiva, even before I fully understood what it was. It was the one Christmas gift I could always count on receiving from Santa. Even now, I believe that this chocolate can create memorable moments simply by enjoying a bite as a special treat. This campaign is truly inspirational for me. I'm honored to embody the joyful, strong, and bold legacy of Lady Godiva and the meaning behind her story. I find humor and joy in this experience.
That makes perfect sense! I researched Lady Godiva and discovered so much about her. How has this collaboration allowed you to engage with her legacy in a fresh way? The myth and legend surrounding her are larger than the actual person, which speaks to her significant impact. If I can reinterpret that legend in a more relatable way—showcasing her strength and determination with a dose of humor—then anyone can relate. It's a privilege to partner with Godiva and serve as a daily source of inspiration.
You've mentioned what you will take away from portraying Lady Godiva, but what impact do you hope to have on audiences, particularly chocolate lovers? If you're a chocolate enthusiast, you're probably already familiar with Godiva, but it means more than just enjoying a delicious treat—it's a daily indulgence and a small escape you can gift yourself. Sometimes, to make it through the day, I motivate myself with a pep talk, a good cup of coffee, or by indulging in some chocolate. Those moments are special, personal, and incredibly fun.
Can you share any insights into your portrayal of her? I'm fascinated by historical beauty, and I know you've played roles that transport viewers to different eras. That's a great question! The story of Lady Godiva, even as the brand associated with chocolate, carries much significance. [The tradition of] having this woman as their longstanding "spokesperson" or symbol continues, but in a modern context. My work with Godiva has taken a completely different approach in terms of style. My outfits resemble those of a cat burglar with a contemporary twist. There's a nod to Lady Godiva but with a more mod and humorous angle. I did push for the chance to ride the horse naked, but that didn’t happen.
It is indeed part of the legend! While it might not be proven that the ride actually took place, I'm excited to see your version of Lady Godiva come alive. Will we see similar modern vibes reflected in the makeup? Will you be blonde? No, I just dyed my hair blonde for a current movie project. It’s a fun change, and I’m enjoying it! I had been a redhead for the first half of my campaign with Godiva, which felt appropriate. Regarding the beauty aspect, I believe there's a modern take on the cat eye happening.
