We've Been Using Louis Vuitton's Elegant Makeup Collection for 5 Weeks—Here's Our Candid Review

After months of excitement, Louis Vuitton's first makeup collection, La Beauté Louis Vuitton, debuted last month. Much of the line quickly sold out upon release (which didn’t surprise us). Fortunately, it has been restocked. For context, the French fashion house has a history of 171 years, and this marks its initial venture into cosmetics. While it has previously provided fine fragrances and custom vanity cases to its clientele, this is its first time offering makeup products. The collection is led by renowned makeup artist Pat McGrath as the creative director of cosmetics, featuring 55 lipsticks, 10 lip balms, and eight eyeshadow palettes. The products are luxurious in terms of formulation, packaging, and pricing. Offered in refillable packaging, they are A) more environmentally friendly than single-use items and B) can serve as objets d'art, meant to be retained and cherished. The beauty editors at Who What Wear had the opportunity to test these products, and after a month, we are ready to share our candid thoughts and feedback. Below, dive deeper into this new luxury makeup range, see how the products appear in real life, and discover which items we believe justify the (substantial) price.

At the center of La Beauté Louis Vuitton is LV Rouge, the brand's inaugural lipstick line presented in refillable cases. With an impressive variety of 55 shades (available in satin and matte finishes), each lipstick features the brand's iconic monogram etched on the bullet. The skin-first formula incorporates natural waxes from rose, jasmine, and mimosa flowers. The lipsticks are built on an 85% skincare base that also contains hyaluronic acid and shea butter. Infused with a signature fragrance, thanks to a collaboration between McGrath and Louis Vuitton’s master perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud, the lipsticks carry the scent of rose, jasmine, and mimosa.

Alyssa Brascia, associate beauty editor, remarked, "I swatched the LV Rouge Matte Lipstick in shade 105, Nude Nécessaire, and couldn’t stop admiring my lips. The matte finish offered a healthier, more realistic version of the mattes I once knew in 2016, delivering dreamy, blurred color with each weightless swipe. I never imagined I could describe a matte product as comfortable, but that’s the first word that comes to mind regarding this one." She added, "What impressed me even more was its longevity. After swiping my lips on a plastic coffee lid for the next 20 minutes post-purchase, my lipstick remained almost perfectly intact. Staying power? Check."

Maya Thomas, another associate beauty editor, shared her thoughts: "The first thing I noticed about this lipstick was its unmatched creaminess. It glided effortlessly over my lips and filled in all the little crevices for incredible coverage. Instead of using a brush, I applied it directly, and I genuinely loved the result. While I think I could have chosen a shade or two darker, I appreciate how bold the color is and definitely noticed its longevity. The stunning packaging makes me want to display it at all times—it’s now one of the most luxurious elements in my makeup routine."

LV Baume is a sheer and radiant lip balm available in 10 different shades. Powered by hyaluronic acid and shea butter, these balms provide up to 48 hours of hydration and are lightly scented with mint-raspberry.

Jamie Schneider, senior beauty editor, noted, "I was fortunate to test Monogram Touch before it sold out, and I can completely understand why it became an instant favorite. It delivers the ideal berry tint combined with lasting hydration. Even with its moisturizing formula full of butters, the buildable rosy pigment remains impressive, avoiding the typical fate of tinted balms that slide off my lips within minutes. The above photo was taken a couple of hours after application, and you can still see the luxurious berry hue. Looking for the perfect burgundy-brown, I’d say Pat McGrath nailed it, as expected. It also helped that Pat herself complimented the shade on my skin tone at a brand preview. While the Baume costs $160, a compliment from her is priceless."

Alyssa Brascia added, "I can't get over how lovely the LV Baume lipsticks appear. To me, they embody the quintessential 'French girl' effect—a sheer wash of color for that romantic, bitten-lip vibe. While the Rouge lipsticks are surprisingly hydrating, this is the lip product to choose if you prefer a shinier, more moisturizing look. The color range is beautiful, and the Monogram Touch shade is especially stunning—perfect for fall."

LV Ombres is Louis Vuitton's distinctive approach to eyeshadow. Each of the eight eye shadow palettes contains four shades: three "wearable, everyday shades" and "one standout hue," available in six finishes, from ultra-matte to glitter
