Pinterest, Instagram, and TikTok Concur: "Toasted Blush" is Set to be a Major Makeup Trend This Autumn
During the summer, "sunburn blush" became a major trend on social media, focusing on recreating the appearance of sun-kissed skin without actual sun exposure. This technique involved applying blush—typically a cream formula—horizontally on the face, from the cheek apples across the nose. Using shades like Victoria's Secret-inspired red, Hailey Bieber's preferred berry, or spicy orange blush, effectively mimicked the natural glow from a sunlit day. Now that fall has arrived, "sunburn blush" is losing its relevance. In its place is "toasted blush," a new trend that fits within the broader toasted makeup movement that's currently popular on my Instagram and TikTok feeds. Even "toasted nails" are trending! Discover more about this significant fall makeup trend below.
Hailey Bieber made "sunburn blush" her iconic look throughout the summer.
In the image, Emily Ratajkowski showcases the "toasted blush" style with help from celebrity makeup artist Hung Vanngo. Is there a difference? Toasted blush maintains the same application technique as the sunburn-inspired look but swaps out the summery hues for warm, cozy, and earthy shades—think soft clay and terracotta colors. It's easy to see toasted blush as just a variation of sunburn blush in different colors; however, there's a distinguishing feature. While sunburn blush conveys a youthful appearance, toasted blush aims for a more sultry, lived-in look, giving the impression that the blush has melted into the skin. As celebrity makeup artist Andrew Denton explained to Who What Wear, this trend emphasizes tonal consistency (deep browns, burnt oranges, rusty reds) to create a captivating warmth across the complexion. To achieve this appearance, choose a warm-toned blush and don't stress about precision in your application. The goal is a sultry, natural effect, so blending and smudging the blush with your fingers or a sponge is not only acceptable but encouraged. Extra points for pairing it with a warm, neutral lip color and soft, sultry eye makeup, mirroring Ratajkowski's look.
Here are some of my favorite toasty blushes:
- **Rhode Pocket Blush in Toasted Teddy**: A clear choice for its warm tone.
- **Violette_FR Bisou Blush Marbled Cream Blush Stick in Louise**: The marbled pigments offer a naturally radiant flush.
- **Sephora Major Headlines Double-Take Crème & Powder Blush Duo in She Goes to the Gym**: A fantastic duo containing both cream and powder formulas.
- **Milani Cheek Kiss Cream Blush in Nude Kiss**: An underrated cream blush, in my opinion.
- **Sephora Dew Blush Liquid Cream Blush in Flirty**: I adore Saie's Dew Blush, especially the shade Flirty for the season.
- **Ilia Beauty Soft Focus Blurring Blush in Sensation**: This blush boasts a lovely soft-focus, blurring effect.
- **Sephora Blush Butter Balm Hydrating Cream Blush**: Summer Fridays' Blush Butter Balm is perfect for achieving that melty, toasty look.
