For many years, I took the DIY path and did my own nails. I would stock up on my favorite seasonal colors, invest in glossy topcoats that looked expensive, and set aside half an hour for the process. Nowadays, I have a regular appointment at the nail salon (and unfortunately for my budget, I’ve developed a fondness for acrylic and gel manicures). Still, I turn to at-home tools and tips for nail and hand care between appointments.

I also utilize at-home tools and techniques when I need to A) give my nails a break from harsh salon treatments but don’t want to leave them bare, or B) travel or focus on other personal commitments instead of my monthly nail appointment. In such instances, I consult the experts: celebrity nail artists. One of my favorite celebrity nail artists is Stephanie Stone. With A-list clients like Charli XCX and Michelle Monaghan, she is skilled at crafting precisely polished nails suitable for stage performances, designer runways, and high-definition cameras. Surprisingly, she often employs drugstore products in her work. Here, she reveals her preferred budget-friendly items. They’re economical and essential if, like me, you want to build a top-notch at-home nail care collection.

How frequently do you use drugstore products on celebrity clients, and would you consider them staples in your kit? “Drugstore products are a daily essential in my kit. There are many items necessary for a manicure that luxury brands don’t produce or offer. If you’re aiming for a fantastic manicure, drugstore products will always be part of the equation—end of discussion.” What would you say to someone who believes that only expensive beauty products are worthwhile? “I would first inquire why they think that. I believe we’ve been conditioned to associate a higher price with superior quality, but that isn’t universally true. I trust many drugstore brands because, for several of them, creating exceptional nail products is their sole focus. A brand dedicated exclusively to nail care will prioritize innovation in delivering high-quality products. In contrast, a luxury brand may view its nail line as a supplementary offering among various other products (like ready-to-wear, leather goods, shoes, etc.). Unless they are genuinely committed to producing exceptional items (and I think Chanel has succeeded in this area with their excellent polishes), luxury brands know consumers will likely purchase based on packaging alone… and if Miu Miu released a sheer baby pink polish, I would save up and be first in line regardless of the formula, so they have a point. However, many high-quality beauty products that you find at beauty supply stores can also be found at drugstores, which is wonderfully accessible—especially as many of us learn to do our own nails at home!”

Do you have any tips for navigating the drugstore aisles to find effective beauty products? “I would advise against entering the drugstore beauty section without a plan unless you intend to buy and experiment with no expectations. There are so many options available, and you might end up with a cart full of unnecessary items that you may not even like. Determine what you need (do you require a topcoat? Nail stickers? Moisturizer?) and read reviews before making a purchase. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok usually have testimonials from others who have tried the products you're interested in, providing insights on whether they are worth your money.”

      Essie

      Apricot Nail and Cuticle Oil

"Cuticle Oil is my must-have nail product for any situation. If there’s one piece of advice I would give my clients regarding daily nail care, it’s to apply cuticle oil! This rollerball is perfect for personal use. I always recommend my clients keep one in their bag because of its spill-proof design. The formula is deeply moisturizing, ensuring your skin stays soft and free from hangnails."

      Sally Hansen

      Pro Tool Kit

"These kits are FANTASTIC. Having the right tools makes nail art a breeze. These compact kits provide essential tools that you previously needed to find at a nail supply store. Today, I'm using the dotting tool for my confetti stars, but it can also be used for painting polka dots, flowers, or anything else your creative side conjures."

      Cerave

      Daily Moisturizing Lotion

"This is one of my favorite lotions both personally and in my work. I apply it to my face and body every night after showers, but I also keep a bottle in my kit for clients who prefer a fragrance-free
