For actress Justine Lupe, who is also the cover star of Who What Wear, beginning to film the first season of the popular Netflix series Nobody Wants This at the conclusion of her first trimester was perfectly timed. "It felt like divine intervention, as I experienced extreme fatigue during my first trimester," Lupe mentioned. "I was so exhausted and found it difficult to get up. I was fortunate that filming began just as I entered that revitalizing second trimester—a real Renaissance moment."
Regarding her character, Morgan, the costume department adjusted her wardrobe to accommodate Lupe's real-life pregnancy while preserving the character's essence. "They did an excellent job of maintaining the character's spirit in these new outfits that were slightly more conservative and covered up," Lupe explained.
In the latest episode of The Who What Wear Podcast, Lupe discusses her experience being pregnant while filming, the process behind her 2025 Emmys look, and more. For highlights from their conversation, see below.
I want to ask about being pregnant while filming season one of the show. My first question is, how did you manage it? I understand the fatigue of the first trimester can be quite overwhelming. Did you experience that? How did you cope?
I actually landed the role during my first trimester and began filming at the end of that trimester. It truly felt like divine intervention because I experienced extreme fatigue, similar to having mono. I was so drained and struggled to get up. Luckily, filming began as I transitioned to the amazing and revitalizing second trimester—like a Renaissance moment, where I felt I could accomplish anything. It was a vastly different experience compared to a month prior. I got lucky.
Now, let's talk about Morgan's style on the show. Are there any outfits you particularly enjoyed wearing, or that received a strong public reaction?
I really enjoyed the bomber jackets paired with the little skirts. The costume team adapted the outfits in response to my growing belly, thinking, "Let's put a bomber jacket on her." There's something very cool about the contrast of a large jacket with legs and tights. I had never worn that style in my daily life before, and now I embrace it. Prior to knowing I was pregnant, they had assembled a substantial wardrobe for my character. They had a clear vision for her style, but once I disclosed my pregnancy—after my first trimester—it became easier to share. They did a fantastic job of keeping the character's essence while making adjustments to the outfits, which became a bit more conservative and covered. Initially, Morgan wore a lot of miniskirts and small tops that showcased my belly, and the team successfully maintained that vibe in the newer looks.
I'd like to shift to a recent fashion moment you had at the Emmys. You wore a Carolina Herrera dress by Wes Gordon, and I'm curious about how the selection process unfolded and how the look came together.
I first saw the dress on the runway. My stylist Rebecca Ramsey sent me a photo shortly after it appeared. I had the same reaction as you; it was absolutely stunning. I shared it with my publicists, who also had an excited response. It didn’t come up again until closer to the Emmys. We thought, "Should we inquire about it?" It felt like the perfect outfit—elegant, joyful, celebratory, and a bit sexy. When they agreed to send it to me, I was thrilled and overjoyed.
