Olimp Clinic MARS is becoming a center where patients with any neurological disorders can receive comprehensive examinations.
Today Olimp Clinic MARS is becoming a center where comprehensive examination of patients with any neurological diseases is possible. The presence of a neuromuscular laboratory and nerve biopsy enables physicians to obtain precise data on the nature of the disease and choose therapy based on evidence. For patients this means a clearer diagnosis, justified treatment and a real chance to improve quality of life.
A new chapter in the diagnosis of complex neurological diseases
Patients with numbness, gait disturbances, weakness and leg pain often go down the same path: consultation with a neurologist, basic tests, MRI or CT. In the end the medical record may contain a phrase like “neurology of unclear genesis.” The problem here is not that the examination was done incorrectly; rather, the capabilities of these methods are sometimes objectively insufficient.
Such examinations can assess tissue structure but do not always answer the question of what is happening at the level of peripheral nerves and muscles. As a result, many people live for years with incomplete diagnoses and receive symptomatic treatment that does not address the cause of the disease.
However, there is now a level of diagnostics that allows one to go beyond conventional studies. It is available only in specialized neuromuscular laboratories, and it is there that a diagnosis can be made in cases where classical methods no longer help.
What is a neuromuscular laboratory?
A neuromuscular laboratory is a comprehensive set of methods that makes it possible to assess the condition of peripheral nerves, muscles and the neuromuscular junction. Data are considered not in isolation but together with the clinical picture, MRI results and laboratory tests, which allows identification of processes that are difficult to determine with routine examinations.
In the spring of 2025 such a laboratory began operating in the multifunctional medical center Olimp Clinic MARS. Work here is organized according to international standards: modern neurophysiological testing methods and expanded protocols for assessing nerve conduction and muscle condition are used. One of the clinic’s key features is the ability to perform peripheral nerve biopsies. This is the first private medical institution in Russia where such a procedure has become available to patients on a scheduled basis.
What is a nerve biopsy for?
A nerve biopsy is a small surgical procedure during which a physician takes a tiny fragment of nerve. The material is then examined under a microscope to understand what processes are occurring within the nerve tissue.
This method can confirm or rule out vasculitis, hereditary forms of neuropathy and other conditions that cannot be diagnosed using other techniques. This is critically important for selecting the correct treatment.
Not all centers can perform such a procedure. It requires extensive experience from the surgeon, who must master the technique of nerve sampling, a pathologist skilled in working with nerve tissue, and modern expensive equipment. The slightest mistake at any stage reduces the informativeness of the result.
Most medical organizations are limited to a basic level of diagnostics that can address only some clinical questions. But clinics like Olimp Clinic MARS are capable of taking on more complex cases.
