      As an East Coaster, I've taken my bikini minimalism to an extreme: I have just two—one black and one red. Recently, I spoke with a couple of people from Florida about what it was like growing up with access to the beach all year round. Naturally, I inquired, "How many swimsuits do you own?" They both looked at me as if I had asked the strangest question possible. "Too many to count," responded one. "Drawers and drawers full," the other one added. I chuckled and replied (very seriously), "I only own two bikinis." They were shocked.

      The truth is, I can't entirely attribute my lack of swimsuits to being from New England. People there still spend their summers "down the Cape," or in Martha's Vineyard or Maine. And even now, living in New York, I always begin each summer with the ambitious goal of going to the beach every weekend—but I quickly lose motivation after making the trek to Jacob Riis twice.
