13 Clever Buys That Have Assisted Me in Avoiding Overpacking
There was a time when I couldn't manage a three-day trip without checking a bag. In fact, it wasn’t all that long ago. Despite planning out my outfits (which I still do), I rarely rewore anything and would pack way too many bags and shoes, occupying a lot of suitcase space. I’ve since changed my ways and I'm proud to say that I only took a carry-on for a four-day trip to Mexico this spring. How did I change my packing habits? First, I invested in a few versatile pieces that work for various types of trips, making sure to include them in multiple outfits when preparing my packing list. These essentials include black cigarette pants, stylish sneakers, and a sweater I even bring in the summer. Naturally, I don’t only wear these pieces when I travel; they’ve become regular staples in my everyday wardrobe, making them worthwhile investments.
If you're part of the overpacking group like I used to be, keep reading to shop the specific items that helped me this year and understand why they’re so beneficial.
**Dôen Lula Pants**
Dôen's high-waisted cigarette pants are arguably the most flattering pants I own. It's no surprise they've sold out several times. I like to wear them for evenings out while traveling, but they're also perfect with flats and sneakers for travel or sightseeing days.
**Reformation Clara Cashmere Cardigan**
I think I own this cardigan in four different colors at this point. In my opinion, it’s the best cashmere crewneck cardigan available. It's lightweight but not flimsy, and the fit is stylish without being baggy. It’s a great layering piece for winter trips and ideal for chilly summer evenings and planes.
**Leset Margo Tee**
I can’t recall the last trip where I didn’t pack at least one Leset Margo tee. It has the perfect weight, resists wrinkling, and comes in all the best colors.
**Dear Frances Balla Mesh Flats**
I’m finished packing bulky shoes; Dear Frances's lightweight Balla flats are incredibly space-saving. I wore them recently in NYC and was amazed by their comfort after walking a lot.
**Posse Alice Mini Dress**
There are many linen dresses available, but I believe the Posse Alice Mini Dress is the best. It's fitted without being constricting, the linen is super soft, and it has pockets. I loved the black version so much that I quickly ordered the white one.
**The Row 90's Bag**
Finding a travel bag can be tricky. I prefer not to pack more than one, and it needs to fit in my under-seat tote without counting as my personal item. The Row's 90's Bag ticks all the boxes for me. It’s suitable for both day and night, it’s compact but has ample room for essentials, and the high-quality leather doesn’t show signs of wear easily.
**J.Crew Gwen Skirt**
A favorite among the Who What Wear team, J.Crew's iconic Gwen skirt lives up to its reputation. I’ve created numerous outfits with it, and it looks chic whether paired with sneakers, flip-flops, or heels.
**SimonMiller Knotted Gala Mules**
I always bring a pair of heels (usually kitten heels), but I'm quite selective about them. Bulky pumps or block heels never go in my carry-on. SimonMiller's Knotted Gala Mules were just what I needed; they are unique yet versatile and go perfectly with all my warm-weather evening outfits.
**Polo Ralph Lauren Brown Baseball Cap**
I never travel without a baseball cap, and now it's typically a Polo Ralph Lauren. While the black, navy, and tan options are nice, the chocolate-brown version is a standout. Be ready for compliments asking where you found it.
**J.Crew Garçon Shirt**
A button-down shirt (or two) is essential in my luggage. I usually wear it at least once during the trip and then on the plane home. Right now, I'm obsessed with J.Crew's Garçon Shirts. They’re neither too fitted nor too oversized and come in a wide variety of colors and fabrics.
**Agolde Valen Jeans**
I love jeans and never travel without at least one pair. After discovering Agolde's Valen Jeans, one pair suffices. They offer the ideal timeless straight-leg fit, are very comfortable, and the 28.25-inch inseam is just right for my 5'4" height. I currently own four pairs, which speaks to my fondness for them.
**Dries Van Noten Sneakers**
I typically avoid sporty sneakers for travel and instead choose a more refined pair suited for occasions like a fancy brunch. Ideally, I’d bring two pairs of sneakers, but if it’s just one, it’s the dressier option. Dries Van Noten's highly popular retro sneakers are my
