      I must admit, I consider myself quite the expert when it comes to jeans. I have over 25 pairs (my last count was closer to 28), and I've experimented with every shape, style, and design available. For most people I know, jeans are a go-to bottom choice; they are timeless, versatile, and extremely practical, making them a fundamental part of women's wardrobes around the globe. However, despite my passion for denim, there is one style I have yet to try: the drawstring jean.

      My discovery of this style was sparked by a casual scroll through Instagram, during which I came across an image of Margot Robbie. I noticed the actress wearing a pair at the airport and looking exceptionally stylish, which made me ponder—why haven't I tried drawstring jeans yet? Suitable for all seasons, drawstring denim is currently trending due to its relaxed appearance and subtle edge, vastly different from past drawstring trouser styles that often appeared frumpy and unkempt. Heavily inspired by loungewear, and frequently seen slung low on the hips of my Gen Z friends, these jeans resemble the popular baggy silhouette because of their slouchy fit. Yet, it's the straightforward, adjustable tie at the waist that distinguishes them, making them, in my view, the must-have silhouette for 2026.

      But where did this style originate, and why does it suddenly seem so ubiquitous? Drawstring jeans were popularized in the late '90s and early 2000s by the streetwear culture and were gradually embraced by those involved in hip-hop and skate fashion, although they remained somewhat under the radar until recently. Their modern revival can be linked to TikTok trends from 2020, where creators began tying laces around their baggiest jeans to keep them up. This DIY trend reignited interest in adjustable denim and set the stage for the return of the drawstring style. By the spring/summer 2025 runways, designers like Gabriela Hearst and Rachel Comey showcased slouchy, drawstring versions that appealed to both Gen Z and millennials.

      Since then, many of my favorite brands have joined the drawstring jeans trend. From Citizens of Humanity's high-waisted barrel-leg style to M&S's jogger-esque elasticated-waist look, there's something for everyone. And styling them is incredibly easy.
